Snakebite
Got my young male dog snakebit last night, I noticed today it was draining running down his leg all the way to his foot, never saw one drain like that, could it have been a rattler? I have got several bitten in my lifetime, never seen one do that.

Re: Snakebite
If it rots out it was def a rattler. 3 days penicillin should be ready to go, make sure he has plenty of water
Re: Snakebite
Furosemide, dexamethasone, and amoxicillin are the normal meds. I had 2 bitten in the lot about a month ago. Went to the vet, started these meds & 2 days later couldn't even find the bites. The day it happened their heads wouldn't go in a 5 gallon bucket. I've had 5 bit in the last 7 or 8 years. All have gotten the same treatment and all were back to normal inside of 4 days with no problems. If not treated most likely tissue necrosis will develope (rot) and can cause major problems including serious infection & death. It does not have to be a rattles snake to do this. All hemotoxic venom will cause this (copperhead, rattler, cottonmouth, etc. ). Just for the record I got both treated including meds to give at home for the next week for a total of $73.34. Not to bad considering.

Well just speaking from past experience my dad has had beagles for over 40 years at least 40 or more bite r artless names and copperheads , only ever gave aspirin and penicillin never had one to die and only hand some of those to rot out, maybe we are just super lucky, idk but I've seenem swelled and sick as they come, but like I said maybe its just us being lucky, for the most part 3 to 5 days and there fine

Re: Snakebite
I carry liquid Benadryl in the truck to help with the swelling and start them on Agricillin till i can get them to the Vet. i usually get a couple of dogs bitevery year. never lost any.
If they get bit around the head you have to get the collar off or loosened up. Ben lucky so far this year. I haven't had any bit yet.

Glad to hear but for $35 -$40 per dog I think I'll just let the fellar that does it for a living handle the occasional bite.Emma's Beagles wrote:Well just speaking from past experience my dad has had beagles for over 40 years at least 40 or more bite r artless names and copperheads , only ever gave aspirin and penicillin never had one to die and only hand some of those to rot out, maybe we are just super lucky, idk but I've seenem swelled and sick as they come, but like I said maybe its just us being lucky, for the most part 3 to 5 days and there fine

Re: Snakebite
I've had a ton snake bit and normaly no matter that you do 3/4 days and you can't even tell it. I did have one to rot out and it took 2/3 months to heal up. Mine done exactly what you said it started to drain off i ended up force feeding him a mixture of stuff with a big syringe because he wouldnt eat but eventually he got better. I think he would have died if i hadn't forced him to eat and drink.
