solo him 5 times in a row and see how what that does for him.

welcome to the ranks of fast hounds. some will never be smoth line runners. keep feeding him tracks, I don't have time to solo. i like to have atleast one that can stay on the inside and run the hole track, keeps the races cleaner but when it's heads up running thos fast hounds will make u smile.

When the dog gets around 8 years old.they will start to slow down and start running the rabbit

a lot of diff things can make a young dog start cheating running of the night all the time or running in small starting pen where they get to see the rabbit to much sometimes you can start this by running them in the same hunting spot ever time if their smart they learn the way the rabbit is going to go why run through the brush when you know where it going to come out i like a hound like that i want them to get the lead what ever it takes but i dont trial or hunt just like to watch and listen to them run good luck

Dogs will run like their bred! Getting smooth running bred dogs is the easiest way to have them run smooth. Slower usually means smoother and not over running the track. Slower the dog, shorter the overrun.

Having the fastest hound gives him all solo time.

Most of us don't have time to solo one dog so pick from the front every time. Lots of bad pack faults can come from running solo and when you run with friends and strange dogs some will not run with others.

Used to be a problem seen often when most of us had a Beagle running loose and it ran by itself a lot. Pack would be running and you would hear it off somewhere running by itself.

Was good for killing lots of rabbits as when you killed the one the pack was running, the pack dogs would go to it and run its rabbit until you killed it while it quit that rabbit when the pack joined it and jumped another to run solo. That system will run a pack to death and all the dogs soon learn it and the pack will just quit hunting and listen for 'Ol Solo running one for them to take.

I agree with John. I have had rough running dogs and soloed them to death and after a year and sometimes two they were still rough as day one. I think soloing a rough or overcompetitive hound too much can actually make it worse as the dog learns to have the rabbit too its own and when put back in a pack will do anything to get the line to it self. The dog is breed to run te style it inherited. Its all in the breeding. Usually what I see is the way a dog starts is the way it will run the rest of there life. They may pick up speed, loosen up a little more as they mature and gain confidence but there basic running style stays the same. I would solo your dogs a bit and then try to brace them with a clean close running dog that makes them pay in the check when they get loose. Hoping that the rough dog learns to stay closer so it doesnt get the rabbit taken away by the other older cleaner dog......Hope that helps......Andre

I don't have time to solo them all equally. Have four dogs that all need more running. Instead of have one larger pack always messing up on checks, I've broke em up in pairs. Seems to help out a lot, first week for it though.

I don't have time to solo one either, but I would make time to figure out what his deal was. if I was up in there air on weather to keep the dog or not.

he never said how old it is. so we don't know if the hound is 9 months or 9 years, ( unless I missed that part , which happens allot)//LOL

if its a young dog like a year or so some solo time should help it will have to slow down and do the work.
solo a few times then pack , solo then pack see how it affects its running ability .

if its a older dog it may already be set in its ways, or it may just be over competitive and more worried about getting the front than running the rabbit.

there is a lot of what if's when we don't have much info to go on.

but in the end you have 2 choices, put up with it or ship it out and move on .

I have sold a few really nice dogs because they did not fit me to a T. still great dogs just not a great dog for me.
I have a slot they have to fit in as far as what I enjoy hunting over and works with the pack a have put together . if they don't, well someone else will love them because they fit them to a T.
they are dogs not machines . but with all the blood lines , kennels and format's out there you can narrow it down pretty close to your ideal of what a great hound should be.
not sure I went off on that ramble ... but there it is anyway.

If a dogs rough he's gonna be rough its in the blood but if there's blood there that can run a track right meaning smoother the only way is solo!!!!!!!!
