I reckon its what you like in a dog.To me it was a mix up bird dog in the 70s.That dog was something eles to hunt over.You talk about finding a rabbit and holding it.Man old Man.I would hunt everyday if I had a dog like that.

Mr Zion Pete was and still to this day is the most underrated dog out there. He is the start of so many lines of dogs and has never got the credit he has deserved. Anyone who knows of the dog knows that's true.

If you're breeding hare bred hounds, and you keep breeding to hare bred hounds, then you are line breeding Mt Zion Pete.
To say he is the most underrated hound out there, that's far from the truth...the fact is he is not longer relevant in today's breeding. "Oh how can you say that"...well I might have so much Mt Zion Pete and you might have so much Mt Zion Pete, but because you have what you have and what you breed for and I have what I have and what I breed for they run totally different.
While if it wasn't for IFC Mon Chien Wally (who all of you forget about) and IFC Mount Zion Pete there would be NO difference in the hare hound from the cottontail hound, look back in history, they were the two hounds that changed the world in hare hounds.
Pete being underrated and overlooked...go back and look at old Hounds and Hunting magazines from his era, he was one of the only hare dogs listed at stud in the magazine! He and his sons (Lakeside Snowflake, Larmay Toastmaster, Florona Midnight) changed the face of large pack, and arguably saved the beagle in the south from the brace world. Pelli Nelson told me that Pete put hunt, foot and desire in his pups and that's what the trial dogs were lacking that were coming from the brace bred hounds at the time.

Kanesirish. That is the most informative post I've ever seen on Pete meaning the only post I've seen in years that actually gives credit to him. Like my post said he is and was the foundation of many lines of hare bred hounds. But no one ever talks about him at all. Glad u did.If rabbit dogs were America Pete would be George Washington.

How about Branko's Boone Creek Trimmer. Out of 37 trials, he placed in 33 with 27 First Places!!!

I never had the chance to see Boone Creek Trimmer run, but he was a hot hound during his time in the Mid West. I got to see a couple super nice hounds out of him here in the Northeast. What was failed to be mentioned the majority of the trials he was entered in were sanctioned trials after he finished, and that's where he earned his reputation. Not taking anything away from him but dogs like Ranger Dan (30 wins), Slick, and I think Stone's Set Me Free got those numbers running in licensed trials.
Back to Mt Zion Pete, if you get a chance look for the Larmay Story, before they retired Bob and Pearl Baker reprinted it in a few of their last issues and I believe the original article came from a Large Pack Magazine from the early 80's. If you want good info on Mt Zion Pete, Dagwood Labaan, Trigger XVIII it's in there. The craziest part of the story is FC Marigold Jane was leading the pack and stopped on a dime to make a 90 degree turn on a hare and she was slammed into by Pete, breaking her back and ending her life.
As far as being the "George Washington", maybe, he and Mon Chien Wally did revolutionize the sport with their game/format specific offspring. But a dog that you need to think about is Ch. Yellow Creek Sport, he had two wins and liked a win to finish for his title, his owner quit (whose name escapes me) trialing after he was beat by a dog that quit in a brace. If you look back in pedigrees you will be hard pressed not to find Yellow Creek Sport behind every brace, gun dog, hare hound, house pet out there.
