Sick Beagle...

Post by NCSportsman »

My oldest male (8), seems under the weather. He eats, but not his usual amount.

When he goes to urinate, he arches his back, and only drops come out. Also, his tail is hanging low instead of wagging and up...

Could he have a bladder or UTI infection?

Thanks...

I'm no expert, but that would probably be my first guess. I would start him on some antibiotics and see if he improved. If not take him to the vet.

What kind of antibiotics should I try? Is there anything I can buy from Tractor Supply?

What Earl said sounds right, I have an older male that gets an Enlarged Prostate a couple times a year.
My Vet treats it with Chepalexian Antibiotics.

I bought some canned wet food from the grocery store last night. Mixed it in with his dry and he devoured it!

This morning did the same. He seems like he's getting back to his old self again.

He's been losing weight too... I think I'll keep feeding him like this for a week or so until he doesn't look so boney...

Is he drinking alot of water? If drinking alot of water and going off feed and losing weight rapidly you might want to have vet. chech his renal/kidney functions.

First, before spending any money, hold the tail up and try to squeeze around his butt hole and see if anything bust loose, smells awful. This may be the problem and it will make them hump up and hold their tail down. This is worse this time of year as most of us are not running much and this happens to some breeds and lines sitting around more often than others.

Had a dog doing similar thing. His symptoms were uncontrolled urinating, and after couple days he got to were he only urinating drops, tried to sit while urinating to, like he lost controll of rear end. Also held tail low. Trip to vet and a X-ray showed bladder stones. Got med to try break them up. Took it for week and got better. Med was cheaper than X-ray was. I would advise taking him to vet though.

Think I found the problem! After feeding him wet food the past week to put some weight back on, he started to seem better.

Took him out for a run last night and noticed a litle white piece of rice crawling from his rear end.
