I prefer females. I run with both but only keep females. I always say the females are the hunters just like with wild cats ecs.. They seem to have that hunter instinct that is natural to them as though they are hunting to feed their little ones. Seems way out in left field but makes sense to me.

I like females. Seems like they typically hunt harder and handle better. Although, I do run males too, but they have to stop and pee on everything before they wanna get in the bushes.

Although I prefer to keep females, if listing a top 10 beagles I have seen go 8 of the 10 would be males.
Re: Males or Females... Poll for Magazine Article...
I happen to prefer females, seem to start earlier and handle easier. I like to field trial as well as hunt and have had problems with females coming in season just when going to hunts in other states, so I have a couple males. Males make every good dogs just seem to take more time and effort.

Females, If you finish a female there is a broad selection of stud dogs out there to breed of your choice and you have the whole litter to do whatever you want with.

Re: Males or Females... Poll for Magazine Article...
I like females because they seem to mature faster and settle in to hunting at earlier ages. They handle better, pack great together and seem to have fewer checks than my more competitive males. My females seem to compete against the rabbit instead of each other. The work as a team.

I like males and females so my opinion won't count. But, I look for consistency in the litters, males and females, hunt, desire, levelheadedness, ability and build. I want a dog that wants to hunt and please me, this same requirement goes for both sexes and I want it all in the same line of hounds.
I've tried some so-called different lines of hounds and you get some good ones and some bad. Some, the males are goofy or slow to mature, others the females good when young but grow old fast. I hope to get 8-10 good years out of a hound, longevity is also as important as ability.
I've always been grateful to those who've handed down the hounds and the quality of their life's work for us to build upon. When I get lucky, I appreciate them more and more...
