Males or Females... Poll for Magazine Article...

Post by Laneline »

Please participate in this poll for an upcoming magazine article. Please feel free to include personal preferences and opinions… indicating specific reasons, strategies and/or advantages for Gun Hunting and/or Field Trialing. Please reframe from slanderous disputes and respect the personal opinions of others, though they may differ from yours. Some answers will be “quoted” in the article. Thanks for the participation.

NOTE: A third option of: "Doesn't matter, I like both Males & Females as long as either get the job done" is purposely not included. Be "hypothetical" and if you had to pick one, which would it be and why?

I personaly like females because most of them start hunting right off the talegate.Little easyer to handle in the field.
I love the males to and have had some realy nice ones. Some of my best were males, just takes a little more paticents.
Until another great male comes along i will have to stay with females. David Hayden Hannibal Mo.

I voted Male for one reason only-They are ready to go trialing when i am. However gotta love them females-Till they come in heat 2 days before a big hunt.

females they handle good hunt hard and tend to get in less trouble. If you have a good female you can find a good stud dog to breed to fairly easy. down side females go in heat for three weeks and if that is in the middle of hunting season well thats three weeks.

It's hard to beat any good dog, a strong male is a must need but so is a good female. I prefer a good female with the reproducing power to keep a breeding program going. I got good males around me that can breed to anytime.

A good female will be a good foundation for years to come, its much easier to find a great male to breed to your foundation female than it is to find a great female to breed to your foundation male!!

To me Females seem to handle better from the start. but with proper e-collar training either will handle very well.
I agree with the others on their comments as well.
it's good to have a male on hand when your females are in season so you can hunt or trial.
and a great foundation starts from good reproducing females from proven stock.
so if I had to choose one it would be female.
like Casey stated, I too have good line bred males I can go to if need be.

I would have to say female for me.
Even though I like and keep a male or two
I keep mostly females. I can't really say that
females are better in the field than males or
that males are better than females, I think
that's totally up to the individual dog male
or female. I like females because I like to
raise my own pups and I believe you can usually
go out and find a better male to breed to than
what's in your own kennel (if your not line breeding)
or (if your not kennel blind). Lol

Find females that suit you, multiple, I like to have four(three same line, one outside line) that fit my wants and needs and that way cycles tend to be less of an issue.

I guess sometimes they could all come in at once, but I will just deal with that.

You can always go out and research a male and find a compliment to what you have, but if you aren't starting with what you like, why do that anyway. IMO.

I like females the best because they seem to mature quicker and are easier to handle.
Like BC said if you have good females, you have the basis for the future of your kennel.
I also like to keep a few males to hunt when the females come in during season.

I believe females are consistently better where males are more hit and miss to get a good one. The females are easier to handle and when your best female comes in heat it gives you a chance to see what your other dogs are made of. You just don't leave a nice male at home for no reason.

We keep a lot of first class females because we enjoy breeding our raising pups. The females, when not in heat, can also come in handy during gun season. However, I prefer a strong male for the following reasons. They are ready to go when it is time to trial or gun hunt. They are usually stronger in tough running areas. The males that we use for stud have proven that they can boss a pack in the field. ROWCO
