When Wolves Attack (Warning--Picture is Graphic)

In just ten minutes 9 dogs were killed in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Tuesday, August 6. Wolves came in and just destroyed our pack. Before we even had any idea there was a problem, the dogs were mutilated. The scariest part of the whole mess was how quickly it evolved and how close the wolves were to us.

Normally I would never post a picture like this, but I think it is important for everyone to know just how brutal a wolf attack is. I apologize to those that find this picture offensive. Imagine it times nine and that is what the four of us that were running had to face.

Michigan's DNR thought stocking wolves in the UP was a great idea. They supported this natural method of controlling the deer herd by bringing back the wolves. The Federal Government finally took the wolves off of the endangered species list. I wonder if anyone who "loves" wolves has ever had to witness first hand their effect on beagles and their owners.

I was lucky in that I only lost one pup. Scotty Derrick and Larry Harrison each lost two of their best dogs. The Old Man lost four dogs. But the loss was way more than just losing hounds. The majesty of the swamps and the joy of chasing a hare won't ever be quite the same for me.

I worry for the houndsmen in the Strongs/Trout Lake area and all of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I am sure this wolf pack is just getting started. The scariest part is that there are over 200 packs just in the U.P.

Brilliant idea, the wolfe reintroduction that is. There is a reason they became extinct!! Merciless killers with no natural predators in the wild. Only us and we cant hunt them in certain areas.

Hope the activists for wolfe reintro see this pick as well. Next time could be there house dog on a camping trip.....

My friend Jim Campbell lost 4 of his patch hounds a couple year ago to same way in the same area, heard one hound cry and all went silent. They are territorial killers, nothing is safe within their boundaries, coyotes and cats leave.
My good friend a Newberry no longer has hounds as the wolves ate every one but the last and he got him moved before he became wolf chow.

So sorry to hear you & friends lost hounds to these beast. It is scarey, you don't have to bump into them, they come looking for you.
The DNR offer no help or retribution for the killings.

ps, there are two known pack of wolves in the area your talking about.

It is a terrible thing to say, but I think these packs have acquired a taste for dog meat, yours looks half skin't and eaten on...

Jim sorry to see and hear that. We had a wolf howling last year in Trout Lake as we just turned dogs out. My friend was the one who found 3 of your fathers dogs. I may not be able to go this year and it may be a good thing!

Terrible news.....I run Trout Lake area quite often and although I see there tracks on a regular basis have't had an issue with them yet on the dogs.

You can bet I'll be in line on September 28th when the wolf liscenses become available for purchase. Again sorry for you loss.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) —

The Department of Natural Resources reported Thursday the latest estimate is that 658 wolves roam the U.P. That's down from 687 two years ago.

Biologist Adam Bump tells the Michigan Natural Resources Commission the DNR recommends having a hunt in November and December in which 43 wolves could be killed. It would be held in three sections of the U.P.

One area includes the city of Ironwood and the adjacent township on the western end. The second takes in parts of Baraga, Houghton, Ontonagon and Gogebic counties. The third includes portions of Luce and Mackinac counties in the eastern U.P.

I am sorry for your loss... That is a terrible tragedy. I am honestly surprised they killed so many at once. That is not normal wolf behavior at all from all the things I have read... Here is another attack pic and story that is almost 100 percent IDENTICAL to your hound. It even looks like your hound although you can tell it is not.

They normally isolate one individual and wear it out taking it away form the pack instead of doing it yote style. The fact they had time to pack devour that one animal you posted is interesting. How long after the yotes came in on you was that pic taken? It would take a significant amount of time to do that much damage on a carcass by one animal and looks like the whole pack helped eat that one..

Maybe if you gathered up all the dogs and took pics of all nine together and posted them to the news papers and tv it would go along way to opening up a season on them but just because they attack does not mean we should extirpate them IMO...

Sorry you had to go thru that, thanks for posting the incident and location though and if it ruffles somebody's feathers so be it. We ran up there last fall. I think I won't be in a hurry to go back.

DISTURBING PICTURE. i'm glad you ran it. there is a group that wants to "reintroduce" wolves into the adirondacks. i'm gonna save this picture to show them what will happen if they do. wolf or coyote i'm shoot'n. they stay where they lay. sorry for your loss.

What is the fine or punishment for killing a wolf out of season,or out of the correct hunting area ? if one was to get caught.
