Pup from a "good Producing" brood female or Top female??

If you have a top quality female how many have bred to a decent male with outstanding pedigree? Why not find the best of both worlds?

Hey bill {flint river} now there is 2 of us .I have a male off her @ Reggie that is a great dog.Just bred him to my best female.Sue just made L.P.R.Champion and is plain ole good rabbit dog.. Thanks Ron

I think this is getting of track, juel didn't produce for how many time she was breed. not saying a few didn't turn out, but more didn't then did, know back to my orginal statement. some times crosses don't work, sometimes they do. just because a hound has a title doesn't mean crap. there are prolly better hounds in the woods then getting trialed. that's a fact. breed what u like and if u can live with it cool. jack of all trades reproduced better then he was. his sire prolly won more then any other male is the history of beagling. but look what jack reproduced. u have to take a chance and be ready to cull.

Here's my 2 cents. Lots of things factor In with pups. Time of year their born, pups getting in the right persons hands. How their started. Can't all be blamed on the sire and the dam. I've been guilty myself of not putting in time on pups that they needed and then they started slower than I expected . Wasn't the pups fault as much as it was mine. I agree I think the blood needs to be there, but if you're not going to do your part don't blame it on the sire and dam. Now that Hunter is off playing baseball for a living, I will get back into HUNTING again. I will use Hunter as a example if I wouldn't have spent countless hours working with Hunter and traveling all over the U.S with him and giving him the opportunity to get better he wouldn't be where he is today, same goes for beagles

I understand breeding the best to the best! It only makes since. Everyone has seen quality dogs come from good dogs maybe not the best. A friend & myself talked about this recently. A good producer is a good producer. Bottom line. Pedigree to back or not. Best advice I ever received was "breed a dog that you like to a dog that you like, odds are you will get a dog that you like." It's all a gamble! Best wishes to everyone!

I have always looked at traits much more than the dog as a whole. With crosses I have made, my main consideration was if the traits of the female and the traits of the male would mesh to produce the type of rabbit hound that I was after.

A lot of factors can have an impact on the dog as a whole, but looking at strengths and good characteristics seemed to help me predict how the pups would perform. I think this is especially true if you have seen several close relatives to the sire and dam and they mostly have the same characteristics as the dogs you are breeding.
