Sorry about those beagles. When the kennel isn't safe, what do you do?

Red Rock Biologics makes a vaccine for Rattle Snake venom. It's a shot followed by a booster at 30 days. It was developed for Western Diamondbacks but has a cross protection properties against many other snakes including Timber and Copperheads. The recommended dosing is 1 shot then a booster 30 days later. After that they recommend 1 booster each year 30 days before anticipated "snake season" in climates where snakes aren't active year round or 1 every 6 months in areas warm enough for year long risk. My vet sales it for $220 for 10 vials or enough to do 5 dogs for a year initially then each year after that 10 dogs annual booster. The injection is like most other shots, just give it under the skin. It's not designed to take the place of vet care in the event of a Rattle Snake bite but it is designed to lessen the severity of pain, damage, and symptoms making recovery much more likely and faster than without the vaccine and in some instances vaccinated dogs did not require vet intervention at all. I'm not saying it's a cure all by any means but I've looked into it quite a bit and it does seem to be a safe and effective vaccine if you feel your dogs are at risk of such an exposure. It's not for everyone but it is worth looking at IMO. Sorry to hear about the loss of the dogs.

RED ROCK BIOLOGICS says: Crotalus Atrox Toxoid (rattlesnake vaccine for dogs) was developed to provide protection for dogs against Western Diamondback Rattlesnake venom. It is most effective against this snake's venom. Venom from many other snakes found throughout the United States is similar to the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Thus, this vaccine may also provide protection against the venoms of the Western Rattlesnake (including the Prairie, Great Basin, Northern and Southern Pacific varieties), Sidewinder, Timber Rattlesnake, Massasauga and the Copperhead. Partial protection may be obtained against Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake venom. This vaccine does not provide protection against venom from the Water Moccasin (Cottonmouth), Mojave Rattlesnake or Coral Snake. (says may like to see clinical trial better yet serum from timber and eastern diamond back , and cottonmouths incorporated into a vaccine for our pit vipers).

Yeah, it's not that effective on the Eastern. Even though they state it was not developed for the others besides the Western if you can find the link there have been a lot of positive outcomes with Timber and other vipers besides the Western. Very little info on the Eastern though. What little I have found indicates a very low number of vaccinations in that area (probably because the company itself states little protection from them). If I can find that info again I'll post it. I looked once already and cannot remember where I found it, I gave it a google and even binged it with no luck, guess I'll have to be more creative  At any rate, like I said, it's not the end all be all for snake bites & it's not for everyone but it is a pretty cool product and who knows maybe someone will come up with one for the other vipers out there as well.

http://www.insiderpages.com/b/371746869 ... al-kinston My friend had a bitch get it in the head by a timber rattler the only dog i ever known to survive such a bite the following link is his Vet who saved his dog. He claims to save almost 80% of the dogs he has treated if brung in 2 hour or so period. He uses nijections of vitamin K which helps with bleeding and tissuse damage combined with antibiotics and anti inflammatories. He is very reasonable priced too. Your vet might email him and ask his treatemnt regime as word is he is the best around .We have many deer hounds fox hounds coyote and coon hounds besides beagles in eastern NC, so he sees a lot of bad bites.Dr RANDALL & Dr HUNT

Never woulda guessed vitamin K but I guess it makes perfect since because K aids in blood cell production.

Take this for what it's worth. A guy in Alabama told me that he puts turpentine on the bite.It draws the poison out.Feeds the dog bacon grease to dilute the poison.
I don't know shizz about dogs.

Interesting you say that Steve, a buddy of mine had one bit Saturday morning. Foot swelled 3 or 4 times its normal size immediately. First thing he did was soak it in turpentine, gave him a shot of pennicilin, by that afternoon already cracked and draining. By Sunday swelling was gone, he gave him another shot of pennicilin and he told me yesterday the pup acted like nothing had happened. Of course in this area it was most likely a copperhead and not a rattler and he bit him on one of his back legs.

had my 2 pups at Steve Hawkins 40 ace pen being ran they got it by a copperhead swelled but were ok in like 4 days ready to run rattlers are a different story 2 years ago a man drinking at Dublin Raceway saw a rattler nearby was walking around showing off the devils serpent. he had to pee so went in the field behind the track to get relief. the next day my friends father was bush hogging found him stone cold dead in the field called the police reported his hand had fang marks and entire arm was black and the side his head too. His arm was swollen bigger than his leg and head like a basketball. the flesh already had necrosis rotting tissues was so disgusting you gag. only know 2 dogs in 30 years to survive it- snake must already bitten something recentily.
