A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Lifes to short to have to hunt behind an ugly Dog!!! But then again Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder!!! Feed what ya like and like what ya Feed!!!
Me I would much rather feed a Hound with Good Conformation over one with bad........
Cindy if its one thing i have learned in my Short time on this Board there are some that will argue just for the sake of arguing BUT in the most part all are fine. The discussion has went on time and time again About the good bad and Ugly on here. And there are those that just refuse to believe that a show dog Can hunt!!! Well What about my huntin Dogs that just like to show
AND we all started Somewhere I did not start out with beagles just to hunt I started out showing.. now I do a little more hunting than I do showing But I still Show my Dogs so that I can let people know what these Hounds were bred for you Should see the looks on some of the Show Folks Faces When I tell em Yes I hunt them Also Or the looks on the field Guys Faces when they find out they are show dogs!!!!!
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
I know very little for sure but this is a sure bet. When a fellow walks up to the wire on your pen for the first time. The first thing he will always ask is what dog is that ,asking about the the best looking one.
Hi Danny,
Yes, letting our conformation Beagles run certainly puts some nice muscle definition on them. Also, when we show we have our dogs down to a weight I think most of ya'all would agree is a good "running weight." Kinda like where one less cup of food would make them too skinny.........
The AKC judges are pretty tough about condition, etc. It isn't just about beauty It is about the Beagle Standard.
Happy Beagling!

Cindy, thanks for sharing this on the board. I was wondering how you were making out up there! I can vouch for the mouth not being bred out of the show hounds. We took a 4-yr-old show Champ after he retired, Jim and Connie Bucksot own him; we put him in rabbits and he took right to it. The most beautiful clear chop mouth and he hunted the entire time - never raised his nose from the ground. He was bred from Shaw's Spirit of the Chase blood, and that line seems to have retained a lot of the hunt. I'm sure there are other lines out there that have as well. Congrats!
Honey Pot,
congratulations on your winnings. It's nice to see a show hound that can make the switch over to running rabbits.
What part of New Hampshire are you in? There are many AKC Sanctioned clubs in the area that run both Small Pack Option and Large Pack on Hare. If you are serious about trying your hounds in an AKC Sanctioned Field Event drop me a line and hopefully I can help you out. We can figure out a type of trial where your hounds "fit in" with their running style.
Congrats on your certification. We ran with Jan & Carol at the triple challenge last year, had a great time. We actually had a dog come up lame after the brace format and Jan (a vet) went above and beyond to lend a hand. Two great people. Glad to have met them. We have alot of different show blood in our pedigrees (Lanbur, Strongbow, Durajo,Echo Run and Shaws) no problems here of running rabbits. Honey pot would like to see your hounds pedigree. Thanks Dave McVay http://www.sundownbeagles.com
Thankyou Dave McVay (who has gorgeous hounds and can stack a Beagle with the best), and Kanes Irish, and Bev, Jack, and TC for your nice replies! I certainly did not want to disrupt your board-- just wanted to post about some fellow Beaglers who happen to show their dogs and did well in a field event too. My dog was nowhere near the event though so I am not saying she qualified (although we just found out that we did get in Westminster this year!!!)
There is talk over on our list (ShowBeagle) about adding some hunt trials to our annual National Beagle Club Specialty. I think this is a GREAT idea and hope we can pull it off. I went to my first NBC specialty this year and I have to say I think every Beagler, field or show, should take the opportunity to get to an NBC Specialty at least once (then you'll be hooked!!). Our field Beagler star of the specialty was Mandy Bobbitt and she had some beautiful looking field CH. hounds that were in the ribbons (conformation) at the specialty. There are classes for Pack dog, Pack bitch, and etc.
Dave, if you are still interested in my girls pedigree you can see it on my website under Honey (http://www.honeypothounds.com). I bought her from Jon Woodring (Lanbur). Jon is a great guy and he has sold some nice Beagles to folks wishing for dual Champions
Have a great day! We have 3" of fresh snow here for the Beagles to play in.

Thanks for the compliment. Looked at the pedigree and it looked very familiar. Thought you may want to know that Finese is now part of Sundown beagles. If you are ever close bring a beagle and stop in we would love to show you our beagles and run on the farm. (we may be able to kick up a rabbit) LOL!
Hi Dave,
I just sent you a email on your websight and realized I actually sent it to Don. You got me all worked up when you said you had Finese. Can you email me please? HoneyPotHounds@aol.com.
Thankyou!!!

Congrats to you and your friends! I enjoy see a fine looking hound as well as hearing 1 drive a rabbit. A hound either hunter, show dog or best-
pal, it's bueaty and or ability lay's within it's owner's want's so keep'm
showing--running-- or just being there when you need someone to listen.
Pay no mind to folks that are nameless. Hope that everone has a Merry Christmas!!
Again Congrats
Cindy, isn't this the Champion in your avatar as she appeared in The American Beagler July 2003? I believe she had a wild and crazy rabbit-runnin' fool for a companion, right? She sure turned out nice!
Hi Bev,
Yes, that is our Champion when she was a wee pup, LOL!! Thankyou for the cute post!! Buster was her rabbitt running fool kennel mate and he has been rehomed with a family that enjoys spending more time in the woods than we do. They do a thing called "Geotracking"....kinda like hiking with a GPS........and spend hours out there with the Beagles hiking around. Buster LOVES it. He hated being home with the hubby when I went to dog shows...wouldn't come to him...just was not a man's dog. I couldn't bring him to shows with me either as he was so nervous and panted and worried the whole time. So he's happy in his new home and we are happy with a new little puppy bitch from Wishing Well's lines to hang with Honey.

Cindy, congratulations on your recent wins. I saw your dog twice (at Jon's) when it was just a pup. It's nice to see the show folks contributing on the beagle boards. TC has always been a huge resource here and on another "Beagle Board", Gina H (Ryng Wryath Beagles) has been making remarkable contributions and anyone who keeps up with the UKC, knows the McVays names well. Happy Holidays and I wish you continued success!
James C., you spoke words of wisdom in your post. I agree.
Dogs don't have to look good to win tittles, but conformation "enhances their chances"!
Congrats Cindy. Was in Ft Worth back in 2000 and met loads of great show folks there. Would like to see more dual purpose stock with the Beagles. But it seems that AKC has a "glass ceiling" on thier website as far as the field Beagles go. Until this problem is eliminated in the AKC headquarters, the dual purpose Beagle will never flourish as it once did
