Band tail or not?

Post by walkerdogman85 »

I have a 3 year old male tri color and his tail bleeds really bad just after a few minutes in the field. I called one vet and they wanted 263 dollars to do it and the other vet said I could band it. Just curious as if it would be ok to band? I have docked tails when pups were 3 days old. I can but sheep bands for just a few dollars! Please let me know! His tail is raw the last 2" or so and he always seems to be licking it and messing with it!!

I know one thing!!! I would be using the vet that told you, you could band it yourself over that other cracker jack vet that wanted $200+

Simply my opinion. I have banded three here with good results, I won't guarantee good results, but who can.

I have seen several others that were banded as well and it was a good thing.

PM if you would like how I did it. Thanks!

It is thick where we are. I have never banned a dog or seen one die from bleeding out his tail. Maybe I just need a dog with hunt.

I use bands, and see good results. I second the thought to stick with the vet that suggested using them.

Band it or tape his tail with duct tape. I have banded two older dogs myself. I have also taped their tails as well.

Here's a video of how to tape their tails if you want to try this route.

Just pull the skin on the tail towards the butt and get the band in a joint where you want it.It will sometimes cause discomfort for a few min. Then I guess the tail goes numb.I've run them the day after with no problems.

It's going to be in the mid 50s here for the next week, do you think flies will bother it?

i followed shotguns advice on taping and with grear results. plus you get to make up some great stories whem people ask about the tape. i usually start with that helps to keep the static down and my dogs dont get shocked that way  if it does not work you can still band but not other way around.

The vet that said I can band it said if its raw and has no hair said it will never heal! You guys tape before you band or just do it before you band to see if it helps?

We have banded 30 - 40 with no problem. We put the dogs on antibiotic for a week, just as a precaution. Banding just makes it easier on the dog. Why put them through the pain and agitation every time they run if you don't need to?
