My males are pretty laid back with each other but the female fight like the dickens, although i did have a 6month old male that i put in with a 3 yr male and for a while the 3yr old run the roost but when he got about 9 moths old he took over the 3yr old and became the cock of the walk in his kennel, i guess he got tired of taking them butt wipings. lol
That's the funny thing about alphas; assertive as they can be with other dogs, they seem to be the most docile and cooperating when it comes to their owners. Ours is an absolute teddy bear when it comes to people, (even strangers) and children especially, yet he also tends to be a one-man dog in the field. If one of us is in the field with him, no one else is going to catch him. He knows to whom he belongs, lol. At field trials people would try to help hook him up cuz I'm such a gimp, and I was always saying, "Thanks for trying, but he'll come right to me." Jack would swing a wide berth around anyone else on his way in to me.
This is also the only dog that refused to sleep in one of the new boxes we bought. He got into a battle of wills with me when I removed his ratty old box and put a spankin' new one in there for him. He laid outside no matter the weather for months until it turned off cool and I couldn't take it anymore. I had Ralph to put his ratty old box back in his kennel, and he was in it before Ralph closed the gate.
Gawd, I love that old dog. He's 13 now.

Sorry about the tangent...

Thunder he is double bred Luci Van Little Man, but has a bit of Chapman's Buzz Bomb, and a mish-mash of stuff. Here's his whole pedigree: http://www.americanbeagler.net/jackpedigree.html

Took a long time to get our Buddy used to the new one, and he didnt care for the doggy door I put on this year but hey he finally got over it. I cant kennel him with any other male. He is top dog too. They all back down from him here. Exept it seams he chose our Casey to be his female over all the rest. She can get away with anything with him???? He was seven in Sept.
I got our young male who turned a year old in July with our female that was a year in June. Those two are another thing. They are both trying to be top dog. Bear is a little guy next to Emmie but he wont back down from her anymore. I am expecting the big one to BLOW! I would switch them out but I got one that was due to come into heat and still hasnt. I dont need that right now for sure....LOL. I was keeping the sisters in there with him, but one moved to the birthing pen, and the other is in with Casey whom I know will treat her right (other than the occasional game) Block them out of the dog house cause it is all mine....LOL

Re: Kenneling males together??
Growing up I had a chocolate lab/german shepherd female that looked like a thin, long-legged chocolate lab and she only weighed in around 55-60 pounds. I can remember this dog going at it with everything from a woodchuck to a 145 pound male chesapeake bay retriever.........this girl never lost. She was the protector of our family and our property and didn't let anything give her any crap. But the one thing I always like about her was she was never looking for a fight.......except with the wildlife living around our house.
She would almost go out of her way to cut slack to a new dog that someone might bring over with them but when she had had enough she let em know. And she wouldn't go overboard with it either, she'd pin them into submission by the throat until they "gave in" and then she'd just let go and walk away. On a rare occasion the other dog might come back for seconds and she'd do it all over again and I never saw it take more than twice. I always respected that dog for being quick and smart in a fight but most of all for being smart enough to know she didn't always have to fight. I've owned a few dog since her and some smart ones at that but I doubt I will ever have another quite like her again.
