Post by FreeHoller40 »

Has anybody had this problem where a dog just randomly starts chewing on their paw??? I have an older dog and hes chewing the heck out of it.... I guess hes wanting to go into retirement early hahaha.... But hes a good dog and I havent ran him because hes tearing his pads up... What is something yall have done to get them to stop... I have checked it, there is nothing in his paw

If he had tore his pads up it might be a healing itch that has him chewing. Try massaging bag balm into his pads to help heal and soften them. That alone might slow down the chewing, it can't taste good.

Mine licks off the bag balm like it was candy. It's probably because of it containing lanolin. Last time I had her running, she ended up with minor cuts on her paws and a couple blisters because of a thin crust on the snow in the shady part of the bushes. I am an old new comer to Beagling. On the way back home, I thought that may be I should stop at the drug store and buy "Penaten Cream" and try it on her paws. After all Penaten has been around for probably over a hundred years and as treated millions of babies' rears due to diapers rash and other nasties like schaffing, burns etc.
This stuff sticks like mortar on the paws, seems to taste bad enough for her not to want to lick it and according to the label it relieves itch as well. After a couple applications she was already much better and 2 days later she was good to go.
May be you could give it a try. small can of the stuff is about 4 bucks.

I have a beagle that chews at her paws A LOT. She mostly does it when it starts getting warm out and also develops ear infections. I believe it is allergies I don't think my dogs is food related cause she mostly does it in the warmer months along with the ear infections. Her paws swell up too and get real raw I tried several things like anti itch spray and hot spot stuff i got from tsc but nothing really makes her stop until the cooler months hit. It's kind of like addiction with her she loves to chew her paws raw.

Good luck let us know if u figure it out

Cooz your dog sounds like one I had and after a lot of money at the vet and store's and internet trying to find the dog relief changing his food helped the most . Cooler weather just suppressed the symptoms but the problem was still there in my case. One other thing you may want to look at is the thyroid, as I recall the test was not a bank breaker and treatment was cheap. We discovered the thyroid problem by accident a year or two after switching foods so I can't say the thyroid caused the problems all along but it could have, I just know life was better for me and the dog after we switched food and treated the thyroid.

I don't know if it's the same thing but my English bulldog does that vet said it's yeast build up in between toes. Wash them with dog shampoo will help.
