What 'style' is your hound?

What bloodline do you have and what is your hounds running 'style.' Speed, hunt, line control, check work, size etc. Help us newbies out. I'd like to know what type of a hound someone is talking about when they say they have 'weircreek' hounds or 'black creek' hounds etc.

I realize there will be some variances between hounds from the same bloodlines, but a general picture would be nice.

patchgirl.good ?I will tell you from and old rabbit hunter.The best bloodline out there is the one who s happy with what hes got.I ve seen guys that you could give them the best bloodline or dog out there and they would not be happy with it in two weeks.But thats a good ?

Black creek and weircreek are a kennel name. Their hounds are from years of breeding good dog`s to good dog`s I think most might be tri or blk/tan. You can go to top 100 beagle site and scroll till you see their Site name.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is this- if someone says "my hounds have Branko blood" are we generally talking about a faster, hard hitting hound? If someone says " I love Blackcreek hounds" are we talking about medium-ish, excellent line control? I just want to know what characteristics make up different bloodlines.

I have 15" hounds that are linebred back to I.F.C. Maravic's Blue Ninja,his littermate sister Branko's Conna and their sire FT.CH. Branko's Jack of all Trades.Closer up you would find I.F.C. Greenwell's Reggie and his littermate brother F.C. Turbo Charged Thunder Blue.Generally speaking you could say these hounds have predominantly Branko blood.
They are what I would call medium fast to fast.They have good hunt/search,endless bottom/stamina and can hunt all day everyday within reason.They run a pretty good line and when conditions are right they can and do drift a line to a certain degree as oppossed to the slower more conservative hound that wants all of the scent line.As with any breed of hound used on bear,cat,fox or coon the hounds that can run with a lot of foot sometimes will over shoot a check to different degrees.But, what I like about these is they will SHUT-UP the moment they loose the line and snap back to the point of loss. They do work the check from the inside -out but work it quickly and with intensity.They do not "blow a hole in the ground" and if they can't lift it here they will widen their check till they can and then they fire out with it.This is what many mean when they say "hard hitting".
I would say these hounds show a medium nose for me here in Tn. but I have raised and sold several to friends in New Hampshire and Maine that use them on hare in the deep snow and cold and they show an adequate nose to get the job done there.They have good hound mouths and run with a short bawl/chop.They use their mouths right with no loose mouth,popping off and little cold trailing.When they are barking the rabbit is running.
I've found that this bloodline when linebred shows a lot of consistancy in traits and appearances.They are intelligent and people friendly and I've never had a shy one.I've had several that never ran off game and some that did but they broke very easily.They are not trashy hounds.
There are many"lines",crosses and styles of hounds out there.This is just one of them.Hope this helps.
You asked about Weircreek and Blackcreek hounds.I think you would find those hounds to be much more conservative than the dogs I've mentioned.

mine are patch hounds ...mostly started with yates bred dogs. now i have mixed some superior patch in with mine . they are about 7-8 on speed. most are 9-10 on hunt,,good noses,,now they vary on check work .most work close ,then wander out ,,some wander first lol. handle like a baby all of them do ,,easy to trash break,if they run trash at all,,some just never do. as you know they are line bred pure patch ..mine are normally around the 14 inch mark,some smaller some bigger.fro9m all the patches i have seen ,i tend to have better nosed patches as an average .

weircreek normally is gonna be about 6-7 on speed ,good hunters..a tad mouthy for my liking ,alot of 15 inch hounds

blackcreek that i have seen were 3-4- on speed..good hunters about a 6 on hunt ,were more of the 14 inch range of the ones i seen..some smaller.

A lot of different bloodlines fall into different styles of hounds.To me the style a hound is would be determined by the format that it would best compete in if a person was wanting to trial it.The quickest and easiest way I know of is to go to some field trials of different formats.You'll be able to see lots of different hounds together and in action and be able to decide what style you like best.And then focus in on a bloodline with that style.Ask lots of questions one thing all houndsmen have in common regardless if the style they run is we like to talk about dogs.

The hounds I mentioned in my post above would be best trialed in A.K.C. S.P.O.Mid-West Beagle Gundog trials,A.K.C. Large Pack on hare and/or swampers and A.R.H.A. Little Pack trials.

My hounds came from bloodlines down south in MS.

They are Cruise Jim Dandy and Tadpole bred. They are 13/14 in. in size and run 7 speed on a rabbit, hard hunters and have good line control.

I will be running in ARHA PP when they are fully ready to compete.

My style is medium fast. They run when the line is straight and walk when the scenting is tough. As least that is what I expect them to do. Through the last twenty years I have used Pearson Creek, Gay, Sunken Land Sparky (Hanlon-Wingate), Wingate's Brandon, Fulcount, Applachia Mountain Jay, Kalagha, and then I started breeding to dogs that I produced. Break O Day.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I was looking for. Great descriptions. That helps me a lot. I've been to a Performance Pack Trial and a UKC Hunting Beagle Trial with my friend who goes by Cooz on this board. I like how that type of dog runs, pretty good line control at about a medium- medium fast pace. I have a young Yates bred Patch hound who is 7mos. She's been running since she was 5 mos. As of right now, I would call her medium fast with surprisingly good line control and pretty good hunt. I've fed her a lot of rabbit tracks. She's still hesitant to pack up with other hounds, but every time we try she improves. She ran deer once when she first started and we shocked her off of them. She hasn't ran any since. She has a very honest mouth. She will not make a peep unless that rabbit is up and moving. I really like that quality, because I can trust her mouth. Her check work is decent, but I think packing up with some other dogs would help her in that regard. My husband has shot a couple of rabbits over her and he couldn't be happier. If she doesn't get too fast and start overrunning checks, I'm thinking about trying her out in Performance Pack. If she does get faster, maybe Little Pack?

I also have a new pup that has some Apltn Mountain/Tadpole/ Cassidy blood. She's only 10 weeks now, but thinking she'll be another Performance Pack 'style' hound.

LP for right now . If my ms stay where it's at now I'm good but as I get older will be going to a med running hound .

If Patchgirl can get off work she will be going to an arha progressive pack trial where she will b probably handling one of my dogs in the next month or so
