I always heard if you breed a dog in the early part of her heating cycle you get more females. Breed her toward the end,more males.

The stud determins the sex of the pups, there is 1 week of swelling, 1 week of bleeding, and one week of breeding, typically. When she stands for the stud and cocks her tail sideways, that's usually a pretty good indicater she is ready. They are not all the same, use your common sense and talk to your vet. Make sure your female is caught up on shots and wormed before heat cycle comes in, is what my vet recomends.

Your right, the male determines the sex of the pups. I have a old male that throws 75% females in his litters no matter who he was or is bred too and at what time in there heat cycle.

breed the 1st week of cycle for more females 2nd week gives you a even mix, 3rd gives u more males

Actually, if you know the exact day the female started.
To get more females....breed the 12th thru 14th day of her cycle.
The later the better.
Yes, the male controls the sex of the pups...but the female gives off more hormone after the middle of her cycle therefore having more significance in the sex determination.
I used to only want females and bred on the 12th and 14th day.
I've had litters of 7 all female.
My buddy always bred on the 10th day, and complained of having mostly male litters!
Now, I just breed when the female's tail flips to the side.
I like a good mix of males and females.

I am not real smart when it comes to genetics and, if I remember correctly, we only touched on the subject in high school biology class (and that is 47-48 years ago), but(once again), if memory serves me correctly, the females eggs contain x and y chromosomes and so does the male sperm contain x and y chromosomes. Depending on the amount of x and y in each egg and each sperm and which egg is fertilized with which sperm and which is then dominant is what determines the sex. I am certain that there must be a biology teacher ( or collage biology major) who can give the low down on this subject. It would be interesting to find out which are "old wives tales and which are not.

Male sperm swims faster, but dies sooner. By breeding your female before the eggs are released, you have a better chance of getting females, since the female producing sperm will be alive and waiting on the eggs after the male producing sperm have died off.

u guys are right....kinda. the male sex cell or sperm cell does determine the sex of the embryo. but the female has many more eggs and embryos than are every delivered. many embryos are absorbed by the female after the fertilization has been completed. with that being said the final male vs. female head count is completely left to chance in animals that have multiples, like dogs. there is no proven breeding time to get more females or males, but with that being said, every time i breed late in the cycle i seem to have more males. i hope this helps.
