Garmin stats...

Post by Mo. Beagler 5000 »

So I know there is a BILLION variables on how fast dogs go and under what terrain and what the rabbits are doing that day, wind etc... Is there a general consensus on what speed slow, medium and fast is in terms of MPH on the garmins.

Today was the fastest speed over distance I have seen on my garmin... They ran for about 4 hours and went over 12 miles averaging WELL over 3mph.. That includes down time and one rabbit they flat smoked with no checks...

On two hour hunts with good running, I can get right at 4.2-5.1 mph on the garmin but as the day wears on the averages go down because we don't find rabbits or they just slow down a bit... I keep meaning to take pictures so you guys can either laugh or marvel at my potlickers lol

What do you guys consider good or bad or do you only count the speed when the rabit is up and not the down time? (can you even do that?)

This, is an excellent question. Maybe we , as a group, can finally figure out what is fast and what is medium fast. We all know what slow is. LOL

Today on a sight chase, my pup was practically licking the rabbits tail and my Garmin only read 3.9mph. That seems slow for a sight chase to me. Could my Garmin be off? Maybe the rabbit was slow??

If only they had a top speed section!!! That would be neat but the average is hard for us to be able to judge by cause i turn my garmin on at the truck and then they go pee or crap and its still reading speed, also depends on how fast your dog is moving while it hunts!! If you have a slower methodical hunting dog but fast on the line your average speed will be lower than a dog that hunts on the run and covers more ground and is still fast on the line!! Just what i have noticed and i have been running the garmin 220

Here is a pic I took Thursday night while running Country Lane Firen Star. She was flying right off the tailgate. She ended up running 5.5 miles at 4.7mph. I took this picture about 30 minutes Into running.

This is a pic of Country Lane Smoke later on.

You can get a top speed if you plug your garmin into your computer and bring up the dogs track log. Highest I have seen my one male at is 22mph on a site chase.

This was from 2 days ago, first 6 miles they were hammering good. I start a new hunt when I drop the tailgate. This includes before the first jump and all the down time in between (not much this day). Had two old females and two 9 month old pups.

This is a very good topic and very interesting as I am uploading yesterdays hunt onto my computer. I hunted yesterday from 1 til 3:30 we ran 4 killed 1. The dogs went 3.57 miles and travelled at 2.14 mph avg and max speed of 11 mph. I consider them medium speed dog sbeing that haven't really hunted with anyone else's dogs to compare.
You think your dogs are sorry you should see mine!!!!!!!

If you are in the mid to upper 4's that's some dang good running that day.

I need to figure out how to work with my tracks online to see max speed and speed while they are running without the down time. To me, that is the biggest issue. If you have nothing but running for four hours and a day where you jump two rabbits... the system doesn't tell the difference very well and its misleading.

Thanks for all the responses, Keep em coming.

Someone with slow dogs needs to post their speeds.... and someone who thinks they have a 10.

This is the first interesting post I have seen in a long time. Perhaps, there would be a way to judge speed using the Garmin. There would be many variable of course.

Running cottontails, I can average about 2.8 to 3 MPH. Running a fox, a little over 6. On the same day, in the same conditions, I had a dog lock onto a series of rabbits and make this average while some other hounds got a fox for 2 hours and got 13 miles out of it. This has only happened once but I thought it was something to consider.

I like to compare the dogs average speed between cottontail & hare. On conttontail mine ususally average high 2''s -3 mph, on hare the average usually jumps up to high 3's -4 mph.

Depends on how deep the snow is....on bare ground 5-6mph is about the average....in deep snow it drops to around 3.

Why can't you use the "pause tracking" during down time and only resume when they are running?
