Prednisone will definitely knock the itch out, but doesn't really treat the problem. What was the hairloss pattern? Tailhead and rump is often caused by fleas? Any new bedding?

Hey Doc, The hair loss seemed to me to be kinda random in nature. A couple of them had hair missing on their sides from about 3" down side from spine to near the bottom of their tummy, front shoulder to rear hip, fur was lost all over but was in small spots about the size of a pencil eraser. We had them to the vet all summer long, I even broke down and bought them Frontline to try. We put 7 dust in bedding, changed it regularly....I dont know what happened this year. It looked like the mange to me but vet kept saying NO. Fur seems very dry and coarse, skin looks fine and not very red. And we have 3 males in the same kennel and 2 had it and 1 looked perfect all year. A couple others did lose hair around tail up close to body.

I give Interceptor every month and have for 3-4 years now. We give em all Droncit a couple of times a year. I never have worm problems. But these daggone fleas are making me mad.

Is there anything or anyway that is less expensive for kennels to control fleas, short of buying Frontline?

I think I am gonna tear my kennel boxes out this winter and rebuild them and try starting fresh next year with no insulation......just concrete, wood and bedding.

Could food be causing this?

Appreciate your help!

Hope all is well in your neck of the woods..........sure miss having you around here.

Take care,
Randy

Yes, Early this year when I quit trialing as much we switched from Diamond to Pedigree and sometimes a generic Pedigree from TSC called Retriever

I really wonder if that Omega in Diamond caused a problem when they no longer got it?

Shannon said back in the spring the Diamond was causing them to have a runny stool.

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

Maybe you should just cull them all and start over. ;) Pedigree does have a lot of artificial colors and flavors which could be causing some allergy issues. Hard to say really. Skin conditions are tough enough when you are looking at them in person, let alone 400 miles away! The Fatty Acids are way a big deal when it comes to skin and coat health as well.
