Historically speaking, it was the ole melodious mouth of the "Southern Hound"(Britain) that had the tenderest of nose. So the bawl mouth became attached to the indication of better nose...ie...blood hound/coon hound/basset hound.
When I was a boy, blue tic or black an tans coon hounds had the mouth and the nose,...then along came the "Walker" hounds and we all got the "itch" for speed and the chop mouth. Hopefully, a hound with powers of scent will also realize the high(body) scent will suffice his need for trailing and only drop it's head when necessary when air scent fails.
Most the bawl mouths I've been associated with only threw their heads as they became older and more aged in life, but some seemed to love to also sing at the moon to shine, on a dark night when the coon were running. So it can go both ways depending on the individual hound...
I like a bawl mouth but as far as carrying the distance, one bitch with a high yodel mouth beat all I ever heard...
