What male should I breed my female to?!?

Post by Leaddog »

Anybody have or know of a male that would be a good one to breed to? What line of dogs would be good to cross in to to get head up run to catch dogs?

Depends on where your wanting to travel too to get what you want... Where are you from? Also depends on what your wanting to do with your breeding... Are you wanting to outcross or find something similar to what you got...

Personally, if I could breed to only one dog, it would be to FC Valley's Freckled Bandit. He may have a FC Title in front of him, but he is the best AKC male "rabbit dog" I've ever seen. I'm biased, because I've seen him run a lot, but you'd really have to watch him run in the snow, I don't care how deep or the conditions, he really is a treat to watch, but you better have your gun up because the hare is running for its life. As a trial dog he was the fastest, most accurate dog I've ever watched, literally exploded out of a check faster than any dog I'd ever seen. You'd have to see him in the flesh to believe it, even at his age, I believe he's ten or eleven, he can still put it to um and will make the younger hounds look silly. That, and he has produced several excellent snow hounds with very limited breedings. I'm breeding to him as soon as one of my bitches comes in, he's still in great shape, but the old boy isn't getting any younger.

My second choice would be FC Glacier Ridge Renegade out of FC Green Bay Shooter. I never saw Renegade run, but I saw a lot of Shooter in a trial setting and loved him. I have seen a few pups out of Renegade run and I am very impressed with what he has produced, just no nonsense, accurate rabbit dogs, not with the foot you'd get with Bandit, but not slow either. Both of these males I mentioned have been bred very little but have produced nothing but good hounds. Very overlooked Sires.

Here is what I suggest to you.
1. Figure out what traits you are looking for in a hound.
2. What kind of traits you would like to breed into your female.
3. Do your home work on males that interest you ask lots of questions and watch run if at all possible.
4. Has the prostective male had breeedings if so what are offspring showing.
5. Make up your own mind you will be the one that has to live with the decision.
These are just a few things to consider, everyone on these sites including myself can direct you to what they think is the best cross but you know waht they say about "opinions"? If you recieve Better Beagling Mag. go back and look at top producers list this is a good place to start , when doing this also take into consideration how many times a male has been used and take into consideration the success ratio the total number can be skewed by vast breedings versus fewer.
JMO .
Good Luck , Tom Summers
