COYOTES

While running last night I had 6 dogs on the ground and off in the distance I could hear coyotes. Next time I heard them they were closer and my wife who was with me is terrified of them so she started to gather up the dogs that she could the next thing you know they are closing in and here comes my young blue male who just started a rabbit come flying up the trail looking like save me dad and he don't just quit he's SUPER HARD HEADED, she loaded him and we had one dog out. He opened up down in the woods and started scolding a rabbit for a couple minutes then went into a check so I started calling him and then hit him on low with the shocker and he started out up the bank toward where my blue dog came out and the coyotes started yipping and they started to chase him toward me so I took off right at them like a mad man screaming and ready to fight...My wife seen me take off so she started the truck heading toward us going to run them over and they all took off I guess over all the commotion....That's the closest encounter with coyotes I've ever had with Beagles in many many years of running at night...My wife said what would you have done if they would of surrounded you? I said," I sure in the hell wouldn't just stand there and let them eat me, there would of been dead coyotes laying around my body"....At 6' and 225 LBS. I'd say my steel toe Carolina work boots would play hell on some ribs,LMAO now.....

I can't run at night around here anymore for just that reason.It has gotten to where they will start to come in on the dogs around dusk if they are still running.I carry a 22 Browning Buckmark at all times.I've shot at several hit two it didn't drip them but maybe they died later I hope.You start shooting they will light out.It's almost to the point around here when you have a pack of dogs running at night it's like ringing a dinner bell for the coyotes.

coyotes effect my deer hunting , they effect my rabbit hunting so i bought a .243 the other day , i will hunt something , even if its them

We are gonna start hunting them also to try to thin them down some...I've been Beagling for over 30 years and that's the closest call with them I've had, now coon hunting I've had them run dogs off a tree and try to catch them but once again I was in the right place at the right time to scare them off....I'm just glad all my dogs came home safely...

I hate em. I can't hardly enjoy myself anymore due to worrying about them. The ODNR refuses to admit they are a problem. This past spring a guy lost a dog to a yote near by, they never did find the dog,I would assume they dragged it back to the den. The guy said it was the most horrendous sound he's ever heard.

I'm not a fan of coyotes myself, I carry a .38 Ruger LCR just in case I see any when I'm out running dogs. I also hunt for coyotes but they are by far the smartest critter I've ever hunted for. Calling them in and shooting them isn't easy.

We are going to start trying to thin them out how do you guys hunt them??? I have a call and a 308 AR what would you guy recommend??

I've said this over and over on here.There is no way your going to make a dent in them by hunting.What you guys need to do is find a GOOD trapper to thin them for you.Just because a fella has caught a few coons before doesn't qualify him as a coyote trapper.A good fox trapper should be able to do a decent job.
You see,hunting them is a limited time thing,whereas traps are on guard 24 hours a day.If your going to run dogs in that area,just cover the trapset with a cover such as a slice of hay.When thru,just remove it,simple.
I know several on here have had problems with dogs and traps,but it's usually an unethical trapper at fault.Most trappers go out of their way to eliminate dogs,but it does happen.Whether you relize it or not,trappers are doing you a service by eliminating predators and surplus animals,reducing the chances for disease that could effect your dogs.

we have had some issues with them here in indiana. With opening day of our deer season today no deer killed but the boy did go 2 for 2 on the coyotes with his single shot 20 gauge

They are right you cant hunt them enough to dent the population but you can control it. Like I said in the other thread we have killed around 1400 coyotes in the last 12 years. We have no problem finding coyotes in the spots we hunt. 20X20 mile area. Get some big hounds I know you guys would love it!!! Instead of 300 yard circles they make 7 or 8 mile runs, it gets expensive with gas and such but it is a ton of fun!!!

I used to be concerned about coyotes, until the wolves moved in. Coyotes don't seem to bother me much anymore. If it was wolves, you probably wouldn't have seen or heard them, you're dogs would have gone quiet and you probably would have found pieces of them. No offense - it's just what hit me as I read your post. I remember how I used to be concerned about coyotes and now I'd love it if coyotes were all I had to worry about.

All you gentlemen that are having problems with coyotes coming in on your beagles need to get some crogan breed running hounds an after the coyotes had a couple run-ins with them they won't come in on a barking dog I promise.
