Childrem Cold and Hungry,?

Post by Newt »

DECATUR, AL (

The hurricane-ravaged East Coast has been receiving north Alabama assistance, but a Decatur Utility crew turned around after they learned they could not help in New Jersey unless they were affiliated with a union.

A six-man crew from Decatur Utilities headed up there this week to assist with storm damage from Sandy. Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said he and his crew were notified they could not do any work in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, without agreeing to union requirements.

The general manager of Decatur Utilities, Ray Hardin, told Fox Business Friday morning they were presented documents from the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers at a staging area in Virginia. The documents stated they had to affiliate with a union to work, which the crews would not agree to.

Hardin said the crews were not turned away, but were made to believe that affiliating with the union was a requirement to work.

"It was and remains our understanding that agreeing to those requirements was a condition of being allowed to work in those areas," said Hardin.

As they waited for confirmation on the documents, crews received word that Seaside Heights had received the assistance they needed from other sources.

"At this stage, it is not clear who is alleged to have turned the crew away and the company that employs the affected workers has denied the claim," said IBEW President Ed Hill in a statement. "IBEW local leaders in New Jersey have reiterated what has been the long standing record of our union – in times of crisis all help is welcome and we pull together with everyone to meet the needs of the public. We have communicated this to the office of New Jersey Governor Christie as well."

The crew from Decatur Utilities attempted to look for work in other areas, but Hardin said based on the uncertainty of other union requirements, they made the decision to return home after being stalled in Virginia most of the day Thursday.

Other utility crews from Alabama are still helping with storm cleanup. Huntsville Utilities said they were not turned away and are in Long Island, New York. Joe Wheeler EMC said they did not respond to New Jersey, but did travel to Maryland and headed home once they were finished.

...............I was in Albany NY friday. One of my customers told me his sister lives on staten island and needed fuel for there genorater. He drove 125 miles with two 5 gallon jugs of gas for her genorater. NY state police would not let him in the city because there was only one person in the car. Mayor Dumbberg will not let any cars in the city unless theres at least 3 people in the car. This is big goverment insanity. Watch what happens on the east coast this weekend. People have reached the boiling point and it's going to get ugly. BIG GOVERMENT AND DEMOCRAT POLICIES ARE ON FULL DISPLAY ON THE EAST COAST.........I am begging everyone to go vote tuesday. We can do better than this Obama insanity.................GOD BLESS AMERICA...........................

Was not funny at all. People on the east coast need all the help they can get. When union thugs turn away help it's not funny, it's sad for those that need help.

Non-Union Utility Crew's Claim Of Being Rebuffed In NJ Comes Under Fire

Alabama utility crew New Jersey Hurricane Sandy
Out-of-state workers have been pouring into New Jersey to help with the recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy, but one Alabama-based utility crew claims that it returned home because of a requirement that all workers be union-affiliated. Labor officials, a New Jersey utility company and Gov. Chris Christie deny, however, that any such condition exists.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers presented Alabama-based Decatur Utilities with documents stating that any utility crew coming to help out had to be unionized, according to Decatur's general manager, Ray Hardin.

A six-member crew headed north for Seaside Heights, N.J., to help restore electricity, but ended up heading back home after they got to Virginia -- not because they were "turned away," Hardin told The Star-Ledger of Newark, but simply because they couldn't clarify whether they'd be allowed to work at all.

"That was something that we could not agree to," Hardin said of unionization to Fox Business on Friday. "It was our understanding and still is that it was a requirement for us to work in that area."

Unions have a much greater presence in New Jersey than Alabama: They accounted for 16 percent of workers in that Northeastern state in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, compared to 10 percent in the Southeastern one. (Alabama leads its region in union membership, however.)

But union officials completely deny that there was any such condition. "It is the policy of this union and the companies we represent to welcome assistance during major natural disasters -- regardless of union status," Jim Spellane, spokesman for the national office of the IBEW said in a statement. Gov. Christie said the Alabama crew got "bad information" and that non-union crews are welcomed in the recovery effort, according to The Associated Press. Jersey Central Power & Light, the New Jersey utility which provides power to Seaside Heights, is using non-union crews to help restore power.

The Seaside Heights municipal utility, which the Alabama workers were planning to assist, isn't even represented by the IBEW, according to Donald Siegel, the vice president of the IBEW's district officer in Philadelphia, which is responsible for locals in New Jersey Pennsylvania, and New York. He told The Star-Ledger that they couldn't find any evidence of the paperwork Hardin mentioned.

"I don't know where they got that correspondence," he said. "It didn't come from IBEW. It didn't come from any of the locals that I'm aware of."

Another Alabama utility Huntsville Utilities said the fact that it wasn't unionized didn't create any problems when they sent their crews to Seaside Heights. Their workers left the area and moved on to Long Island, communications manager Bill Yell told The Star-Ledger, simply because the state "had all the crews they could handle."

So after they were exposed to the media they denied it ever happened. Union thugs never lie.
Yeah! Someone is going to drive from Alabama to New Jersey to help in a crisis then instead of working they turn around and drive home.
Mike you and PM can't believe folks that work with high voltage electricity are that stupid. Hannity has recorded profanity aimed at the workers when the arrived in New Jersey.
Keep trying Mike but you guys have lost all credibility.

First off, they didn't drive to New Jersey . they only got as far as northern Virgina . You all know as well as I do, those Alabamians got to northern Va. the temperature dropped below 50 degrees and they said the hell with this, turned around and headed back home, because they didn't want to miss the Alabama vs LSU game.

An Alabama fan was trying to get power restored so the east coast would not miss the game. They knew how important those votes from the East are for maintaing their No 1 ranking.
Unfortunately, I am an LSU fan.
