Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
I want a dog to run with the intent too overtake it's game. Pretty much what the Midwest looks for with Control. Sounds Easy huh? Make a Midwest FC.

When the moment of truth arrives, the point of preparation has passed.

Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
What's the difference between UkC and AKC, not a dang thing except rules... Some rules may not apply in UKC and it may apply in AKC.. Are the dogs different no not really. Beaglers in the UKC could easily make a transition to the Midwest Federation. How do I know cause I've seen it, saw it today. Arha little Pack dogs can run in the midwest. Its not the dogs, its the rules that may apply or.might not.

Reference made was to the shorts and otis lines; guess I should have further trimmed the quote to avoid confusion. Carry on.johns03272008 wrote:barnold1 wrote:I'd make the argument that these style dogs are slooooowwww; their supporters just can't bear to say it.Mo. Beagler 5000 wrote:

Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
Com'on man!!!
Akc FC is a hard 1 to get I will agree, there are multipule things that make it tuff.
Like Harner said some of those dogs from other registries can and will do well in akc. Akc is a good format when scored by looking for dogs that run a track as fast as scenting conditions allow, proper use of mouth ect.
As far as all day endurance being needed its not that big of deal. Most of the time they might run 3-4 hrs total all day, broken into segments. You can't run a dog once a month and win, but unreal endurance is not a issue .
As far as hunt in akc dogs there is none. Hunt is not running like a bird dog in front of the gallery looking for a rabbit that the handlers or judges jump most of the time. Hunt is turning the dog loose and finding a rabbit without assistance.
When you tally ho a pack every 5 min you have dogs that are causeing major problems in a pack. The judges need to do a better job of cleaning up dogs making problems over a dog that has done nothing wrong with little score. Pick up the dogs that run with reckless abondoment of the track and mouthy dogs and you will have much better rabbit races with fault free running packs.
Don't be fooled and think since a dog that has a FC in front of its name that it is a bad@ss. There are several of them that are culls and have be given the title, just as the same as in the other registries.

Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
This is one of those posts that you gotta wring out the sponge after you've soaked it up LOL. Same "style" of dog akc midwest rewards a dog that can handle pressure and keep it's own head on while running a track...U.K.C Hunting Beagle Format and Performance Pack formats reward a Jump dog first and foremost. PP was intended to reward a more conservative dog that runs it's own track much like a what ideally make a good A.K.C midwest dog, however you're finding more and more rough dogs winning in PP due to improper judging (in my own opinion), I like U.K.C b/c you can find a hunt somewhere with in reasonable driving just about any weekend you can get free'd up to go a hunt...A.K.C hunts are fewer and farther between. I enjoy all "gun dog" style formats that rewards a run to catch style hound. Dogs can get away with rougher running in U.K.C hound and hunter and A.R.H.A little pack than you're PP formats and Midwest A.K.C. U.K.C typicaly favors a dog that is accountable for it's mouth. Mouthier dogs are more prone to taking minuses not always but usualy.

I've seen mouthy dogs in all formats, seen them get picked up in every format.

Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
Please don't make mention to my hounds(AKC) that they really don't hunt. The 10 rabbits they ran this Saturday will not happen again as I don't leave the path, LOL!! I had two FC's on the ground and they jumped over half of them by getting deep looking for a rabbit the way a dog is supposed to. I guess they are part of the vast minority as well. I personally, have no problem with a handlers working to get a rabbit jumped in a timely manner. There are usually several casts and you want to see as much of the running as you can, JMO.
There are good hounds in all formats, depends on what you like and what you enjoy to compete in. I would like to think that the total hound is out there that can win in any format. That is what I am breeding for, first for a COMPLETE hound, and secondly for a competitive hound. I will keep trying. Hope others do as well. Good running!

Travis isn't refering to your dogs or AKC dogs in general, he is talkin about the Midwest trials. The dogs being talked to by the handlers and worked in the brush. I think Travis is refering to that.

Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
It is all good, I just don't like to paint with a broad brush and be negative towards anyone or anyone's preference. To each his own, but generalizations hurt your purpose. I know I have been guilty of it myself. No offense taken maybe just a bit much on the sarcasm by me. I apologize.
Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
I have ran both
All I can say in ukc u better have a trash free hound
some akc guys condition dogs on off game cause they run in pens and olny in pens.
It is hard to condition a rabbit dog to run with dogs that run deer or fox.
Although there is good and bad in both formats
If your dog gets the lead in ukc u are the target to get minused.
seen good bad ugly of both everything from buddy judging to who handels the dog
When I start trailing I will run akc because the food. Is better and the judges can do the debating not me

Re: UKC VS AKC field trial dogs
Midwest GUNDOG Federation...I prefer my GUNDOGS to work/hunt along with me.I dont set on the tailgate & turn my dogs loose when I'm GUNHUNTING,if so I probably wouldnt kill many rabbits
.I want my Gundogs to work through the field/brush along with me,sure if I happen to jump a rabbit I will call the dogs over & put them on the track,so they can circle it back to the GUN,I enjoy hunting with a dog that handles good, but this DEFINITELY does not mean that the dogs arent hunting/searching for a rabbit themselves,I will not feed a dog that dosnt hunt,as I sure do enjoy hunting over a Solid GUNDOG.
