Actually 2x NLPC IFC Tughill Dark Raider was even younger when he won the first time winning again as an adult hound best 13 male i ever seen run in brutal hot conditions overwhelming dominating and won on the white stuff too.Own a gundog out Darkie at 6 years old incredibile stamina in the heat even compared to dogs half his age. I saw DARKIE at Black River temps in 90's devastate the pack dogs carried out the woods many had water breaks laid down in the creek over half the pack done but I caught Darkie almost 45 minutes after the trial ended in the beaver swamp for Tex. when i nabbed him off the hare he was jumping like a kangaroo still wanting to go.I never seen so much an overwhelming advatage in stamina toughness and desire as he showed that day and again the following trial in the heat at Palmer. After either trial there was no doubt by anyone who won just the other places- amazingily toughhhhhhhh hound TUFF TUFF......!
Steve I missed you in the woods that day at Palmer. I took 2nd and 3rd at that trial with Devine's Powervac and Kane's Irish Sport'n Wood, they had just taken 2nd and 1st at Klipnockie two days before that. The trial was a long one in the heat because the judges had it so close between Devine's Powervac and Dark Raider, a lot of people thought that Powervac or "Hoover" as we call him had won the trial, but I could definitely see where they put it on Darkie. This is what I had heard from the judges. I was also told by the marshal that Sport had come on strong at the end, but he did some goofy stuff at the start of the trial that was going to stop him from placing. If you were there I'm sure you probably heard the same...

Nice bloodline. But my question is can he perform/hunt the thick briar patches and thick and nasty cattail swamps where our cottontails live with desire, grit etc

gfedor, The question should be not if he can hunt the thick stuff. The line is known for hunt and desire. The question should be can he gear down enough to run a cottontail efficiently without dropping it every 40 yards. A lot of guys on this board hunt and there is nothing more fustrating then waiting for a rabbit to circle but having the dogs break down so often that it is no longer enjoyable. Not saying anything negative about PK. Like most said, to have won and placed as much as he did he must be a great hound but if you hunt and don't trial you really want a dog that can lock on and make the rabbit sweat. Beating the other pack mates is not as important. Some dogs that excell on Hare can't gear down enough to run a cottontail. Some of the trials I've been to in my region have cottontail and hare on the running grounds and you see it all the time. A hound is doing great on hare but in the next series when they jump a cottontail they look ugly and cant settle down enough to run it. just my 2 cents....DH

I have talked with Brandon on several occasions about King. His pedigree produced exactly what he is, a hard hitting track driving dog from his dam with enough brains and track power to come back and always know where the rabbit went from his sire. Brandon has told me personally King is on the edge, but when he is on he will indeed dominate as he has done thus far. The breeder Kevin Orr, Joe K., and Brandon, as well as his Dad, all get credit. This hound has a lot to offer the breed, IMO. He puts tracking and point of loss with the power and pop of the line he is crossed on with the Ninja hounds(they are legendary in themselves). I would think with equal time King would run a cottontail too hard for some, but I bet after he settled in he could smoke the hair off of one!!! No hound is perfect, but this little guy has a lot to offer. Brandon is great to talk to and I am sure his dad would be the same. I wish them the VERY best with him!!

I have a top quality female(from Mr. Green Bay himself) going to him in spring of 2013 so I am excited to see what I will have first hand!! I am confident some will come of it that will get it done!! Just my thoughts, as usual maybe I talk (or type) too much!! LOL.

I bred a direct daughter of Shooter to a cottontail bred male fc Langs little Eddie. Eddie finished Here in new York and has more then enough foot for me. I had 5 pups and kept 2 females. I like speed but like them to stop and snap back at a loss and close on the line, I'm hoping this cross gives me what I'm after. If you look at some of the Wingate stuff some of. It is breed that way, hare to cottontail and then back to hare blood.....dh

I would not hesitate to breed to Paw King again. I bred my Reggie female to Paw King last May and I do not think you could talk anyone who has a pup to sell theirs. They are a lil over 1 year old and all doing great. I watched my pup this spring walk the line of a baby rabbit and keep it going for a while. If anyone is interested in what I am seeing out of my cross just PM me and I will answer any questions you have, or give you some other phone #s if you wish. I would do it on this forum but I do not want to see the rolling eyeballs. Like I said I would not hesitate breeding to Paw King or Henrys Hunter (littermate).
