Dog couldn't get it done

Post by mybeagles »

I have a 1 y/o female that I think is a pretty solid young dog. Took her over to a friends house to run tonight where there is plenty of game and cover and she could not keep a rabbit going over 20 yards. No rain there for about a month and real dry. Pretty bad when your best dog cant circle a rabbit when on the ground for 2 hours.

Don't feel bad mybeagles. Its been near or over 100 deg F and dry here for a while and its been tough to run a rabbit. The hounds that I have been running are 1 year old also. I've had a good run here and there but for the most part the runs didn't last more than 15-20 minutes over the last couple of weeks.

Same here when the weather gets cooler I'll take my two hounds out. A lot of the boys down south aren't running to dam hot. I have a butkus pup that's needs more running. Little short runs cant stay with it.

Turned a couple of our hounds loose the other night for someone to see as they were getting a pup out of them, it was pitiful to say the least. 90 degrees at 8:30 and dry as a bone, they sure did not get much done. It happens, others may not want to admit it though, LOL...

I guess if she was faster and could "stay up on it" she would be able to run better....

Took my three out yesterday and pretty much the same until it started to shower lightly.Wasn't much of a shower but enough to get the folage damp and that seemed to help. The rabbits wanted to stay in the standing beans which was okay with me but the ground here is still pretty much dust. :angryfire:

You are in the same boat as most of us right now. Most people have no rain and 90+ degrees everyday. This morning was as good as I have seen it in awhile.

Maybe, I know you are poking fun. My Beagles I will say that in 2 hrs you would think she should have done a little better than that. But these conditions are very tough and thats a young dog a wouldn't be too disappointed. Yes even the fast dogs you are throwing off on struggle right now. In the last couple weeks I've had one or two good races and yes they stayed up tjght on it and pushed it hard. But most of the running has been hit and miss, sometimes they even had to slow down and walk. But most not all they will stay after, might have some real bad break downs but if you can stand to sit and wait on them they will usually find it. A good fast dog only pushes hard when it can, sometimes they can't, but they always wan't to. I think you are probably expecting a little to much out of a year old dog it takes a rabbit dog to have any running right now and very few have those qualities at a year old :) :)

Weather like this is why I advocate dogs with huge nose and line control. I know there are dogs that run pretty consistent in this or -20 but they are very rare. This pup wont be going anywhere, she has been very good leading up to this point. Just a bit dissapointing that she couldn't move a track.

This poor performance will likely save me some money as I would have been inclined to drive her all over the country to field trials if I thought she was walking on water.........

I soloed a 11 month old pup today and he hadn't been out of the pen for 3--4 weeks because of the heat and he couldn't keep one going either although all I saw were young rabbits but he tried his best and his effect made me feel good about him. Might get up early tomorrow morning and try him again.

I put 2 dogs down for about an hour yesterday. They circled 3 times (not a real big circle) in about an hour. I saw the rabbit a few times and was no more than half grown, maybe less. It wasn't good running what so ever but they stuck in there and grubbed it out. I took the two home, grabbed another dog and headed back out. With one dog down and same size rabbit I had a smoother run but was almost at walking pace 3/4 of the time. Same smaller circles but only having one dog down was the key to getting a better run. Still wasn't the most pretty run but for the conditions it was better than nothing.

Ran my 11 month old male solo again for about an hour and a half this morning with a little better results but not much, seems like the only thing that had fun was the ticks. They were terrible.
