My friend, if we get to hunt together i will bring along a 28ga 870 for ya to borrow. When i started hunting with my dad at 12yrs old he only let me put 1 shell in the gun till 1 was 16yrs old so i learned to make the 1st shot count. Since your a seasoned vet i will let you load up with 3 right away if you need to. :D Stay cool my friend, its darn hot out there.
I am sure he will get back with you as soon as things get straightened out down here. Most have been without electric since Friday evening. No electric with these high temperatures has been miserable!

Stavemillbeagles, and Likeemfast. I believe you are missing my point , by about a mile. I use a 12 guage and explained why. Most people look upon shotshell cartridges the same as they view rifle cartridges . They truth is once the shot or bullet leaves the barrel the game cannot tell what the cartridge is, If they are shot with a 3/4 ounce load of sixes at 1295 FPS from a 28 guage hull or 3/4 ounces of sixes from a 12 guage Hull with the same choke designation the results are identical . Most folks believe there is some " Magic" in the shell casing or Shotgun Hull that follows the shot to the target. This is simply not true. Let me give you a good case in point. I used to reload some rifle shells for a man and his wife. He used a 30-06 and she a 308. I loaded 150 grain Sierras for both guns and the average chronographed velocity of both cartridges was right at 2800 fps. He eventually sold his '06 and got a 308 because his wife's 308 killed better. fact is once the bullet left the barrel no-one on this planet could have told which one came from what rifle they were identical. I repeat there is no magic in any shotgun Hulls, and my point was that if you buy a 12 guage you can have all of the others by simply changing shells, but you cannot duplicate the 12 ga's performance with the others. Use what you like and feel comfortable with. I noticed some have mentioned shotgun fit,and it is very important but some seem to be of the opinion that you can't make a 12 Ga. Fit! Likeemfast, Your dad was wise to limit you to one shell as he was not sure you were responsible enough to have any more than that. After reading what you have written on this topic some may still question your level of judgment and think perhaps you should be carrying a lone shell in your pocket. I want to repeat there is no " Magic" in any shell casings. Like Brad said electric was off , just got back on line!

stavemillbeagles wrote:GW i have a question for you, you talk about the 12ga being the best all around but you said if the rabbit is to close you let it make another circle so you don't shoot the rabbit up too bad, Then what is the difference if you use a 28ga and the rabbit is too far and letting make another circle and try to get a closer shot? Seems like the same thing to me.
you still didn't answer the question is there a difference in letting a rabbit make another circle because he's too close to shoot with a 12 ga. and letting a rabbit make another circle because it's to far away for a good shot with a 28 ga?

stavemillbeagles, No, absolutely no difference and it is the correct thing to do as you appear to be aware of. My point was that a smaller guage cannot match the performance of a 12 guage and your statement shows you know this as well. But a 12 can match the performance of the others something to consider when purchasing a shotgun. I own a couple of 28 guages, one 20 guage, and have owned various 410's, 16's and a couple of 10's over the years. Obviously I do not believe that a 12 ga. is the only shotshell worth owning as some would try to make others believe. I do occasionally use the 20 Ga. while rabbit hunting and some who hunt with me use 410's on up. But they all understand there is no magic in the name "410" and therefore limit their shots to the cartridges effective range and do not rely on any Magic . On a different note, Have you ever seen someone packing a 410 or 28 ga. and stating the opinion they do not care if they kill any rabbits or not and then shoot at rabbits at 50 yards , seen it several times.

GW, now dont go changing around what ive said, i said i was only allowed to put 1 shell in the gun to make me learn to make 1st shot count, not cuz i was not responsible. Ive been irresponsible with a lotta things in my life :) but never a gun. Take it from the guy who guts and skins a pile of PA rabbits every year, most dont have a BB behind the head. Shoot for the front or dont shoot at all is my motto. I dont mean to brag, but im pretty accurate with a little 28guage in my hands. :) I got a  We may have to get together and shoot some rock some day. Glad your back online GW, you were missed!!!( At least by me you were) Cant speak for everyone else.

Likeemfast, It does seem that I did stray just a little! I really appreciate the invitation to shoot some rocks with you ( that stuff ain't cheap) but since that episode I had with the Helicopter, the Goat and the Swimming Pool, I pretty much stay away from drugs anymore. Funny. after all of this time If I run into someone I haven't seen In a while it is the first thing they bring up. ( I want to say right now that what you do is your business, but it kinda explains some of your ideas though ) Anyhow, I wouldn't mind splittin' a bottle of Jim Beam with you!

Likeemfast, I think I heard that story, I just didn't realize it was you! I had also heard several people make the comment that it was darn lucky you had your little 28ga. with you, otherwise something or someone might have got killed with all that shootin' going on. You were darn lucky that the farmer and his daughter were both shooting 410's and it was 30 yards from the front porch to the sheep pen so no-one was hurt . Hope you learned your lesson about messing with a Farmer's sheep. Heck, they taught us here in West Virginia, starting in sixth grade to pay for these types of services prior to receiving them. I remember how the parents were all up in arms over the schools teaching sex education at the time.

IT'S AMAZING TO ME WHY WE MUST ALWAYS TAKE A INFORMATIVE POST AND TURN IT IN TO AN ARGUEING MATCH OR SEXUAL SUGGESTIVENESS, OR DRUG OR ALCHOHAL. THERE WAS A LOT OF GOOD INFORMATION ON THIS FORUM,NOT KNOWN BY THE AVERAGE HUNTER. ESPPECCIALLY BY GW, WHO SEEMS TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE SHOT SIZE AND VELOUSITY OF OUR GUNS. WHY DO WE HAVE TO GET OFF SUBJECT, IF WE HAVE NOTHING TO ADD, WHY POST.
I WAS ONE THAT PREFERRED THE 410, BUT THE THE BEST GUN I EVER CARRIED WAS A 12 GAUGE 870, CORN COB FORE ARM, 28 FULL. IT SEEMED LIKE I COULD NOT MISS WITH THIS GUN. BOUGHT A LOT OF THE NEWER 30 FULL 870,S AND COULD NOT FIND ONE THAT I COULD KILL WITH CONSISTENTLY. REASON, THEY DID NOT FIT MY ARM LENGTH, WHEN THROWN UP FAST WERE NEVER IN LINE. I SAY HUNT WITH THE GUN THAT, YOU HAVE THE BEST AVERAGE KILL WITH PER SHOT, BE IT 410 TO 12 GUAGE TO A 32 SQUEESE PISTOL.
WITH RESPECT TO ALL, HOW WOULD YOU LIKE 12 TO 16 YR, OLD BOYS OR GIRLS TO COME ON THIS FORUM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION, AND READ SOME OF THESE INFORMATIVE POSTS.
I KNOW I WOULD NOT. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BLACKBART, I will tone things down a bit from here on out in respect to the tender sensibilities of the younger crowd. I really didn't mean to offend them as I had no idea that the average 16 year old boy or girl would even know what I was talking about. I would think that only in the most unsual of circumstances would any teenager ever have been in an environment where sex and drugs were discussed even in such roundabout ways as I have mentioned. Apparently the teenagers in your neck of the woods are getting this information from somewhere and the source of it should be sought out and then stamped out, Have you all checked all of the dark alleys around your area as I have heard that these types like to hang out in alleys and try to sell dirty pictures to people. We did have one episode a few years back to where a teenager had apparently got hold of some information from someone about sex as she was pregnant,( there is no way a teenager could learn this on their own, as she claimed) She was 17 years old and had recently moved here from cleveland, I have never had any desire to visit Cleveland since then.

Sarcasm GW? I always thought that when the post turns in the direction Bart mentioned, it is time to end it. Nothing left to say. The vultures are picking the bones. Who can follow the innuendo and who would want to.

Hypocrisy Buck? One of the three directions Bart mentioned was Alcohol, Seems to me you started an entire thread devoted to it!

Actually, my "Best Drink" thread had nothing to do with alcohol but rather good hot weather drinks ( I am wondering what some of you connoisseurs consider the best hot weather drink? Doesn't have to be alcoholic). Alcoholic beverages were a subsidiary benefit of that. Water was mentioned but it had its side affects. As for Hypocrisy, I am guilty, sir. Guilty as can be. Sarcasm on the other hand is the use of irony to convey contempt or mockery. It can be funny but generally is designed to hurt or offend. Neither This post, my last post, my "Best Drink" thread, or my hypocrisy are intended to be such and I hope you do not take it in such a way. If you do or have, I apologize.
