shy puppy
Guys i've got a 3 month old puppy that is crazy over a rabbit, but she is really shy in the kennel. i was wondering what you all do to calm a pup down. i have her kenneled with one of my adult dogs. i have tried to handle her more, but she is still shy. when i get her in the yard she will run and play alot. she has got where she will eat some out of my hand, but when i go to pet her she pulls back. i really like this dog and think she has alot of potential if in can get her over her shyness.

she probably be alright in time . is she just kennel shy or is it all the time everywhere. by yourslef or somebody else around? i would tie her out and pet her everytime i went by her . spend a little extra time and feed her a hot dog . bit by bit ..

letting a young child lead them around is the best remedy i've ever saw... and definately put her on a chain... that will bring them out of it in a hurry as well

Re: shy puppy
I have two dogs that are in my opinion above average dogs and they are both very shy. Taking the time that you are is very important but also taking her for walks down town with cars driving by and other people walking is a big help; she needs to be socialized. I have one that would not come to ANYONE other than my self or my wife for the first 3 yrs of her existence. i bread her to a real bold male and raised all the pups, they all turned out fine. By her second litter at 4 to different male she started getting MUCH better around just about anyone. Again her second litter produced solid pups that here getting shot over at 4 months with no prep work to keep them from being gun shy. I’m not saying breading her will help her but it may have been a contributing factor to helping my female.
My second female was so timid that if someone pulled into the yard she went straight into her box and would not come out unless everything was completely quiet. I bread her once also to prevail with a calmer dog that will let a stranger pet her in the kennel.
It is known that breading this kind of dog can pass the trait down but i dont mind it for the only reason being; your much less apt to loose a dog in the woods to a jack A-- looking to steel them while running.
Also it would probably be a good idea to put a bit more time in her with shooting blanks off in the distance or bring a smaller caliber shot gun to the field when gunning over her until you know she’s not bothered by load noises.
Good luck with her.
