Re: sample size
GW: I think you have a point. A large sample size doesn't necessarily mean that a person has gained some measure of experience or knowledge that is not available to another when it comes to beagles. The question was asked and you, as usual, have some thoughtful, interesting and even stimulating statistics. Personally, I have had twice as many dogs as anyone on here has mentioned. My reasons for having them are many and varied. I can't say I was always (or at any time) trying to improve the breed or even looking for a great dog (although a good dog is icing on the cake). Honestly, I do it mainly for fun. You know I bore quickly. The same dog, the same mouth, the same quality every single day just bores me after a while so, they have to go. Give them away, cull them, sell them, trade them: anything to keep the game one that I want to play. I enjoy my dogs but I don't experience any necessary felicity by keeping them. Having said all that, I do know the type of dog that I can live with. Do I have any long lost secrets, no not at all. I know little more than anyone else but I do know myself. I Have a very large sample size and I know what it takes to keep ME ticking.
Re: sample size
GW; its alll coming together now,,,, i was reading other post just now and i noticed that you said iit doesnt matter what your dogs do.. you said if you dont have a good hunt.. you just pat your dogs on the head and stop and buy them a icecream...this is the differance when i have a good or bad hunt i feed my dogs Pride dog food and if I have several bad hunts i start looking even harder than usuall for a better hound,,,,maybe this is why i've owned several... ....Just out of curiosity , what do you do if one of your hounds decide they dont want to run anymore?

Re: sample size
can a dog that regularly eats ice cream keep up with a competitive dog? I would really love to know! a man in love with his dogs will hold on to them bad or good. A competitive person will trade always looking to better their pack. And then you have people like Buck, a good ole boy looking to make a good trade

Re: sample size
see low, there is no reason to get testy. I stated an opinion, , something you said was welcome, apppears you weren't right about that . Another thing you are not right about I never said anything about buying dog's ice cream. You are sure having a hard time with facts . And I may be wrong on this one as I am not going to research my posts as you have done but I think you are also wrong about me saying what I do after a bad hunt. I believe I said after a low performance, keep in mind that you have no idea what a low performance from my hounds looks like, Do you? The answer is no. A low performance from my hounds could very well be what would equate to a great performance from your hounds I don't know I haven't seen your hounds but it is possible. As far as my dogs not wanting to run anymore, been breeding them for over thirty years haven't seen it yet, Wouldn't have even thought to ask a man a question like that unless I had hounds that were doing it? Sounds like you need to keep looking. I'll hold mine!

Re: sample size
I just wanted to see who many dogs you guys have owned. oouch

Re: sample size
See low, I am not offended, I just state my opinions and try to get things straight . I realize I don't have the best " bedside" manner, But it would be extremely difficult to offend me. I was called a Prick on an earlier thread and even if I wasn't one I would not have been offended!
Re: sample size
how many dogs do you have now gw? what kinda dog do you like to run? are you a trialer?
Re: sample size
see low, for the past twenty five years I have generally averaged about 15 per year. I have only bought one dog in my lifetime. I have bred the others. I gave some very fine dogs away last year with the expectation that I was going to breed a couple females this year.( I am down to 5) I don't trial but I visit trials every now and then to see what is being run. A good dog has always been a good dog, this has never changed, I gave a couple away last year that were capable of finishing for AKC Field champion in my estimation. I sold one to a friend that he put two wins on, and I let a friend take one of my females to a couple of AKC trials two weeks ago she placed 3rd in one and fourth in the other, not bad for a hound that had not been run since January. She was not my best one by any means but the only 15" female I have and that is what he was running. I just bred two females and this will probably be my last breeding for a few years. I made a short post of two pups running a few weeks ago that shows the type of hounds I run, It is by me and is titled Just practicing, it should be about ten or so pages back, It will show the type of hounds I breed, the one pup over run a little more than what is typical.

Re: sample size
see low, thanks for the invite. I believe the mountains here in West Virginia provide similar running , with the exception of we do have the big running snowshoe hare, which I believe is lacking in your neck of the woods. When I am serious and take a pack out for a big time I like to run for long periods of time , but a short 8 or 9 hour run does the dogs some good also and that is probably the best way to get a dog that is out of shape back in, just a little at a time like that.

Lopsider: You said, "and then you have people like Buck, a good ole boy looking to make a good trade".
I am neither a good ol' boy or looking to make a good trade. I had rather make a bad trade any day than no trade at all. That is why I am called Santa Clause...I always make people feel good. As for good ol'boy, I don't smoke, I don't chew, I don't drink, and I don't lie. All the rest is just filler.
