Dog Hog

Post by bucks better beagles »

People tell me that there is no such thing as a "Dog Hog" because one can never get too many good dogs. I maintain that there is such a human being, rare though they may be. A "Dog Hog" is a person that has the unusual, innate, ability to acquire good to excellent dogs at little or no expense. Further, as his kennel increases, rather than letting someone who does not have this type of quality dog, have one, he keeps them all and thus, corners the local market and bragging rights. I further posit that a "Dog Hog" has to reach a point of saturation else there would be no way for him to measure quality anymore but what is that point? Perhaps, "Dog Hogdom" is the goal of any of us that keep more than a couple dogs?

Do any of you understand what I am saying? Have you known someone with this rather special talent? I think it is an exceptionable ability but not necessarily, admirable. Then again, perhaps this trait should be encouraged and applauded. Just saying.

Personally, I have never been able to have more than 1 good dog at a time with a bunch of back-packers to go with him.

some people are alot more fortunate that others....however,,what we have to beware of,, are those men that make all there dogs appear to be champions.... sometimes we have trouble seeing the trees for the forest....

Never met a doghog yet but iam sure they are out there. My self i have 4 dogs if one comes along better then what i have in the pen cull time. But iam not one of those lucky guys that will run across a real good deal on a dog,but always looking. In my eyes the dogs that are in my kennel are goooood or they would not be there. How many dogs would it take to have to many good ones :?:

I have met one man that is a dog hog so to say. He gets dogs gave to him and then if he wants to sell them its well over a 1000 bucks and he is a slick/tricky handler in ukc trials. I have pretty much quit ukc trialing because of this man.

I don't know of anyone fitting your description but am jealous of him if he exists. I do see people who make alot of dogs FC. It appears to me that they are only interested in the title rather than the quality of their dogs. They trial different dogs in different formats, under different judges, in different associations to get their points and wins. I guess to them its about the sport of field trialing.

Just sounds like a guy with a pack of excellent dogs that is reluctant to let go of them to me..Seems kind of ridiculous to call him a DOG HOG?

I don't think I have ever known one or even heard of one in all my time beagling. If someone has more than 2 truly great dogs, not good but great then I think they are truly blessed.More power to them they must be doing something thing right.

On the one hand, of course it is ridiculous and I did say that maybe the man should be applauded. On the other hand, too much of a good thing should be avoided. I am speaking humanitarianism here. I am also speaking world class dogs. More than 4 and you should spread the wealth a little.

Surly, more of you know "Dog Hogs".

Let me tell you something that I like about you. When you post you like to provoke thought and dialogue.Even when you stir the pot you seem to do it in a thoughtful manner and not just to attack something. I was going thru some old posts from someone who is pretty much a polar opposite of you and it really made me appreciate how you conduct yourself.

Thanks Joe, you pegged me good. I like the way you use "provoke thought". We all have an illusion of "self" that, if left unexamined, is meaningless. I like to find out who people are. In the beagle world as in all things "life", even the smallest detail is important to think about.

Back to "Dog Hog". "To whom much is given, of him shall much be required". My way of interpreting Luke 12:48 if memory serves.

To me this parallels with wealth; should the richest man in the world spread his wealth around? Does he have a responsibility to take care of others less fortunate? If he doesn't he is also labeled.

I think that beagling is a pretty fair game, for someone to acquire a kennel full of world beaters he obviously put in A LOT of time and effort, as well as money. It's his decision as to whether or not to sell one of his dogs, after all he put in all the effort, why should he give someone who hasn't put in as much effort as him a top notch hound?

No such thing, Dog Hog is a term that is used to manipulate. He who has the gold makes the rules, and has the means to get a dog if he wants. Even if a "DOG HOG" owns it...

See low I thought that this was all hypothetical, I didn't know that he actually knew a "dog hog". With that being said I still stand by my opinion, it's his dogs and his decisions, I don't believe that he should be labeled "dog hog" just because he doesn't want to sell a dog.

BOYS WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MAN THERE WAS AN OLD SAYING.
THROW A ROCK IN AMONG A BUNCH OF DOGS AND THE ONE THAT HOLLERS IS THE ONE GOT HIT.
HOW EASY IT IS TO DRAW A MAN OUT.
OLD SAYING, A WISE MAN WILL KEEP SILENT AND LET PEOPLE THINK HIM A FOOL BUT A FOOL SHALL OPEN HIS MOUTH AND LEAVE NO DOUBT.
A MAN THAT IS HIS OWN LAWYER HAS A FOOL FOR A CLIENT.
AS I FOLLOW THESE POSTS I FIND IT SO EASY TO DETERMINE WHO FEELS THE POST IS SPEAKING ABOUT, AND CALLING THEM OUT, AND THAT THEY MUST DEFEND THEMSELVES.
IF YOU REPLY TO A POST DO IT CONSTRUCTIVELY AND WITH THOUGHT AND NO ONE WILL KNOW YOU FEEL AFFENDED.
