Now I see dogs that are so wired up they don't take time to use their head or their nose. They just rip and run wanting to be in front or first. They can cover more ground then a pointer bird dog and do it fast. They just out run their nose. You ever notice when you hunt a competive dog by themselves the slow down and do a better job. Now through in four more hounds and the race is on. In the past we didn't have to have tracking collars because we knew were our dogs were and our dogs knew were we was. It's time to slow our dogs to a Hunting speed that will maximize their ability.
I have a Buddy that Coon hunts about 5 nights a week, about a month ago he ask me too tag along i agreed and off we went. When we got too the spot he got out his best and pointed him in the direction he wanted him to go. Wtf? Then he released his 8 year old male , the old dog treed twice as many coons as the 3 year old passed more than the old dog, I honestly believe your right we have created these speed demons, As long as there on front we thank its the best.I have personally hated a dog that wants to go 100 yards in front of me to find a rabbit. As we pass by great cover. .
I have been as guilty as anyone . I have recently bred to a stud that many say is the number 1 all around dog there is in these parts, hope i get back what i have lost.

I have heard alot people say that a good jump dog is not the best track dog. Why is that? I've had what I would consider one good jump dog in my lifetime. Early in Ace's career he could jump'em all day long but would not contribute much to the race after that. His last few years he became a much better track dog, but the jumps went down a little. Later in his hunting career I did have some better dogs that would jump a rabbit here or there.
