Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
I'd just like to hear everyone's opinion of the two. Should you just breed good dogs to good dogs, or remain with a certain lineage? I have an up coming breeding and was debating the two.
Thanks

I do plan on keeping a few of the pups, so there is a possibility they will be bred in the future.

Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
I am a big fan of line breeding. If you choose your dogs right, in the beginning, you can line breed to keep the traits
of the dog or dogs your line breeding on....
But what most guys don't realize is you don't have to line breed pedigrees
to be line breeding. you can also line breed on traits of hounds and do this
with two totally different bloodlines and do this for generations with the
same outstanding results as line breeding pedigrees. And to most it will
look like your out crossing your hounds... but the wise breeder will just
smile when you second guess his choice for the cross.
Just remember what a very wise old breeder told me.
" YOU CAN'T RESURRECT THE DEAD, NO MATER HOW YOU BREED YOU DOGS"
of the dog or dogs your line breeding on....

Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
My take:
inbreeding: close family genetics are a little more predictable for the pups. If you like the hunt of the parents, you are better able to reproduce their traits with tight breeding, but I have to stress that both should be rabbit dogs and not bred on paperwork alone. I currently have two different dogs of inbred background and I couldn't be happier, but parents are real rabbit dogs. Can you get knot heads..yes
out cross: two totally unrelated dogs are not as predictive of the outcome. Again I will only cross real run'em to the gun rabbit dogs. Will you more than likely get some rabbit dogs...yes Will they be the type you are after maybe and maybe not. A little more unpredictable. Two hot nosed cross...some may be cold nose. Two fast dogs..maybe some medium pups. Depends on the extent of the traits of the background dogs.
This is my take on the subject. Many dont share my views. So I say "You feedem...you breedem"
Dave
Sorry Roger, but breeding unrelated dogs is not considered linebreeding/inbreeding. You are outcrossing dogs with like traits. If you are breeding the pups, of this cross, to each other in some way, then you are inbreeding like pedigrees.

Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
I would breed the best of the same lineage of a line of dogs that suited me. I've been more content with my litters since breeding this way.
Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
That's pretty much what I started out to do, breeding to a line-bred similar hound, I was briefly entertaining the idea of outcrossing to T-Rex though. I run satsumas which is similar hare hound.

Thanks Dave, you just proved my point and fell into the "MOST GUYS" category I spoke of...Dave Swiger wrote:My take:

Show me some research on what you speak.Im not "most guys" Ive done extensive research on the topic. You need to look into breeding horses and cattle. I will give you all the reference links to the subject, if you would like to read up on it . I stand by my statement...unless you can prove me wrong. I say you dont have a clue about what you are talking about.

Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
I agree with Dave on this one
with the linebreeding inbreeding we can about predict what we
will get
with the outcross it is a crapshoot too many variables

Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
i linebreed alot thats because i found a line of dogs that suits me and if it aint broke dont fix it.
I will not follow where the path may lead; but I will go where there is no path, and leave a trail. LORD HELP ME BE THE PERSON MY DOG THINKS I,AM!!!
Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
I agree with Dave
First off I don't know Dave or Roger I'm just reading the facts and taken what amounts of information I have obtain of hrs and hrs of reading about breeding hounds of any breed.
Line breeding is mating animals who are closely related to the same ancestor, preferably one whose type it is desired to obtain in the resultant progeny. In other words, it is accomplished by using for parents dogs who are closely related to that ancestor, but are little, if at all, related to each other through any other ancestors. They are, in effect, bred in line to that common ancestor. When a breeder says his dog is line bred, one immediately questions, "LINE BRED TO WHAT?"
Different types of breeding inbreeding, Line breeding, outcrossing & family breeding.
What is family breeding? Before you go on the internet looking for family breeding def.
Family Breeding is a mix of inbreeding/line breeding

Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
Me personally I like line breeding as long as both dogs have the traits I like but it can also bring out bad traits so be ready to cull.
Re: Line Breeding vs. Out Cross
Just curious, what would be the breeding technique used to produce IFC Greenbay Butkus and IFC Greenbay Shooter?
