Re: doe rabbit scent
gw, I am no stranger to sarcasm. You try reading into others posts, looking for something that isn't there. As I wrote before, I have never seen a day or rabbit that my dogs could not run. If you refuse to admit that there may be a better dog than yours you will never own one. I have no "super" dogs. My dogs are not without fault. They are simply the most reliable dogs I have ever hunted over. I own 2 complete dogs and 2 pups. I have culled nearly 20 to get these 2. I wil not post a ped as I am not the artist behind it and as I stated it would be of no use to you. The dogs back in the ped were used for specific traits and those up close are tightly inbred. No judgement should be made of any dog based on those back 6 gen in his pedigree. Especially if he is inbred the last 3 gen.

Re: doe rabbit scent
GW, glad to see you still have a knack for making friends, and unfortunately i cant jump in here cuz i pretty much agree with most of what you have said. Im not sure if body scent rubbing against weeds briars and stuff was mentioned yet tho as i have not read the whole post. I know when my hounds are running great they have track scent from those little feet, body scent rubbing against those briars and weeds and body scent filling the air on those days when the humidity level is holding scent close to the ground, boy can they roll then. When that little bugger runs across a old coal field tho its like they floated across that ground and didnt leave a track. They have to work really hard to take him across that when its dry. At times if they can take him across that. Id love for that superior breed of dogs to come to PA and run a cottontail here with no breakdowns, i would pay to see that and get my friend GW a 1st class ticket to come watch that superior line of hounds look foolish. No big woods leaf covered easy scenting grounds here to run on all day. Well anyway, you guys are missing the big picture........... hawks and owls dont hunt rabbits by scent, thats why their the #1 predator on rabbits

likeemfast, You agreeing with me has got me to re-thinking all of my years of experience on this subject. LOL.
bbg, No sarcasim, I called your two hounds Super hounds and I meant it . They can run any rabbit anytime ,not a hint of problem at a missed shot, or at one jumped by a person or suddenly turned by a person. These are Superhounds to me . I have never seen a pedigree that was of no use and I know how much weight to assign to each hound in a pedigree. Please help me and post them for me. I am serious when I say I would like to upgrade,Thanks again. and as far as looking into others posts for something that isn't there, I am not sure what what you mean, have you noticed that I have attributed something to someone and they had not said it, I would like to clear that up please let me know, I am fairly certain that it hasn't happened but if it has I certainly want to make it right, let me know be much more specific.

Re: doe rabbit scent
If you owned them they wouldn't be for sale either. I never called them "super". That was gw. I stand by everything I wrote about my hounds. I am not ignorant or imaginative. What i wrote is fact. Im done replying to closed minds.
Re: doe rabbit scent
likeemfast, I would reply to you but your mind is closed. How is that for sarcasm, no, I mean really, it was my first attempt at sarcasm, How did I do?

Re: doe rabbit scent
GW GW GW,............... are u sure that was ur 1st attempt????? U bugger you, i think your pulling my leg again. You did quite well, and ive been sarcastic and closed minded for more years than i can remember. BBG if what you say is true i congratulate you on only having to cull 20 dogs to get 4 that can do it 3 days a week on any rabbit jumped, i doubt it tho. Just keep in mind if your ever rolling thru the coal fields of PA, MY MIND IS CLOSED BUT THE INVITATION IS OPEN FOR ME TO SHOW YOU WHAT YOU THINK YOU HAVE IS NOT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE. Also let me say BBG im not trying to be rude but what dog cant run on ground covered in leaves in big woods? Probably hare too.

Re: doe rabbit scent
Before I throw out an alternate theory I have on why rabbits are hard to trail after the shot, and after a close encounter with a person, let me say that these conditions do exsist and most are aware of it. Dogs simply have trouble at these times unless you have Super hounds!
S.R. Patch, had a valid point in his cloaking theory. As I pressed him for details I thought he would respond more. I hope he doesn't mind If I advance his theory somewhat as I have long considered the cloaking or cover up idea. S.R. PATCH, hit it on the head when he said animals when they die lose body functions, some animals are also so timid as to lose body functions as the result of a bad scare. When confronted with a potential death experience rabbits being timid involuntarily lose control of a body function and instead of taking a crap they release a fart, Methane gas. This shot of Methane interferes with the dogs ability to readily find the rabbit scent in that immediate area and it takes a few seconds for his nose to clear to boot. Dogs noses are very sensitive to these types of vapors.

Re: doe rabbit scent
I have read this post from beginning to end and im just going to say WOW. I have run all types of hounds on all types of animals from snowshoe hare to coon to coyote and fox to bear and i have seen days where they could pound and days that i wasnt sure if they knew how to run at all. I dont know if i buy into the whole holding their scent thing since if this was the case wouldnt mother nature do this for all animals not just rabbits? I do agree that all baby animals have less scent then adult animals due to something that i cant explain but have been told was mother natures way of protecting the young. I think it has more to do with the scenting conditions for the day or even time of year and that all dogs will struggle on some days and other days even a poor dog can look great. I am no expert and i have only run a few cottontails in my life (Never made much sense to me to run a animal that would go to a hole after 10 minutes of running) LOL but i quess if they loose their scent when scared im glad i have just snowshoes to run.
Hope everyone has a great weekend and the scenting conditions are great so all our dogs look like grand champions.

Re: doe rabbit scent
Riddle me this batman, if a rabbit takes to the water does his scent become stronger or does it weaken the scent.

btw, we cleaned out the barn a few weeks ago, it been so dry an warm weather. Boy, was my nose messed up for a while after doing that, anyone spent anytime on the end of a pitchfork know what I mean.
My friends over in England say the hare run through the sheep and that foil up the scent line, it take a real nose to track through an keep a line.
Some say their hounds run the same rabbit and never change. Imagine the focus and particularity it take to distinguish and track the same rabbit when others of the same family are jumping up or crossing the same line and they do not change off.
I just wonder what minute change it would take in that scent that they're so focused on, to throw them hounds off and confuse them
Hard to imagine all the other scents that pass through a hounds nose that it has to totally ignore and remain focused on that one particular scent, of that one particular rabbit.
I got an old book that talks about the fattyacids and whatnot that is in the make of the scent oils produced by the glands and what chemical release by the body effects them. Some of them Brits and German folks that was interested in hounds and sport were awful smart fellers and wanted to know what happened to certain matter and the effects upon it when stress and body responses coincide. They enjoyed the sport and wanted to understand what may have caused their hounds to fail on a seemingly caught and dead hare, just like we do.
I'll see if I can find the book and maybe it has something else for us to chew on...
ps...I think them little ones not having scent is because their scent glands are not developed to produce the oils for scent yet. You know, just like you don't have to worry about that 4 month old pup breeding your bitch. He may hump on her but his sex glands are not producing yet to get the gob done.
Thanks for the discussion...

Some days you hang you clothes out on the line and they dry quick, some days it takes all day for them to dry, and some days, they remain wet.bluemouse wrote:Riddle me this batman, if a rabbit takes to the water does his scent become stronger or does it weaken the scent.

Re: doe rabbit scent
bbg, I would like to see the pedigree on these dogs. I just like looking at pedigrees from different dogs.
Re: doe rabbit scent
Patch some hounds are trained to follow just one scent in people searches and if you think about it whats the difference of a hound crossing a scent of another animal like deer, fox, racoon, etc and continue to run the same rabbit. I do not believe all rabbits smell the same, diet, minerals in the ground, etc could cause different scents to individual rabbits. Yes I know e collars stop them from running trash, but I also know from training pups that they will learn your scent and track you vrs your buddy hanging around with you. A lot of what is being debated has to do with a dogs smarts or lack of.
