Joeyman, 7 way shot dont cover kennel cough. We vaccinate for kennel cough every year with the nasal spray vaccine. They sell it at co-ops and feed stores here. They also make a shot for it but my cousin is also my vet and he tells me to use the nasal vaccine. He says it seems to work better from what he has seen in his practice. It has been my experience that when they do have kennel cough, lay em up for 10 to 14 days and give them doxycycline or clavamox twice daily for aroud 7 to 10 days. When we ran ours with kennel cough they kept it for like a month but when we lay em up and give em antibiotics it only last 10 to 14 days tops. They need all their immune system to fight it off and they cant seem to do this when I kept on running mine. The good news is that my grown dogs that have had kennel cough dont every seem to get it again and I dont vaccinate them for it. I only vaccinate young dogs that aint had it yet. So far i have never had a dog get it twice.

WOW We have had ours get it Twice in One year!!! We also use the nasal Works great! here is something else We vaccinated just those hounds we were trialling and showing and we were at a Show where it was going around None of ours that we took got it but 6 at home turned up with it a few weeks after!! We always just let it run its course they seem to have it for 10 to 14 days no matter if we give them the antibiotics or not, We do give them a child dose of robitussin for the cough it seems to help! we have not had a case since we moved to Ky almost 6 years ago (knock on Wood) there is Some Real Good information on the net about Bordetella here is one of my Favorite links.

TC, I may be just lucky on my grown dogs. I dont trial so they are not exposed to as many different dogs as maybe some trialers dogs are. One thing I have noticed, way back when I never ran in public running pens, I almost never had a dog get kennel cough. Now, If i send a 6 month old pup to the starting pen that has not had the kennel cough vaccine, about a week after I get them back, they are gonna start coughing and spitting out fluid. It never failed to happen so I just started vaccinating all my pups for it before I sent them to be started. I have put a pup with kennel cough in the same run with one of my hounds that has already had it and the grown hound dont ever seem to get it. My cousin the vet told me though that the grown hound may have it but just not bad enough to show the symptoms but he said they could still be infected. I used to not give the antibiotics and just let it run it's course but something happened last year that changed my mind. I had a 7 month old gyp that had been vaccinated for kennel cough. I got her back from the starting pen and man she was running good. She came down with what appeared be kennel cough as she had a honking cough and had a lot of clear fluid she was spitting out. I was gonna let it run it's course so after about 5 days it appeared to be getting better. On the 6th day I got home from work and found her dead in the doghouse. She had just a small amount of blood that had came out of her nose and mouth but not enough where it looked like she bled to death. The whole week she had it she ate her feed good and drank water good so I dont really know what happened to her. My cousing wanted to try to do an autopsy on her but I didnt see the point in it. He said she may have had something else wrong with her heart or lungs or may have busted something internally from coughing but we dont really know what happened. He said kennel cough dont kill them unless they have something wrong with their immune system anyway but until that point she was perfectly healthy and appeared not to feel bad at all by her body language the day before she died so who knows. After that happened though I have been paranoid not to give them the antibiotics. I dont know, maybe her kennel cough turned in to pneumonia or something. If something can go wrong, it usually will happen to my dog so I just take a little extra precaution from here on out.

Joey,
just search for Liquamycin LA-200, 100 ml Oxytetracycline you can order it from Jeffers and several others about $17-18.00 a bottle. It a good antibiotic to keep on hand. They carry it at TSC up here.

Had kennel cough so many different times over the years. Given every treatment listed. NONE of it sped up the healing process. Asked my vet if there was anything to give them he said i could give the la200 and they'd have it two weeks or I could give them nothing and they'd have it two weeks. I stopped treating for it years ago. It'll run its course. I've never had a dog get it twice and never lost a dog to it. Just irritating. Run the heck out of them with it never hurt a thing.

Same thing here, I got two dogs that have it, the others aren't showing any signs. One dog has had it for a good week and his kennel mate is showing no signs at all.
