I have used valbazen for the last three years and seem to work very well. I heard some concerns about it on another board once and asked my vet and he said that unless you are planning on breeding a bitch or already had one bred this is the best(in his opinion) there is but there is always going to be that small percent dogs that is sensitive to a certain type of medication. I figure he is supposed to know more than me so I use what he suggests. All I know for sure is when I bring my 2 beagles and 2 coonhouonds up there for there yearly shots he always brags on how good they look and how healthy they are and thats enough for me not to change anything.

I use valbazen with good results, it doesn't get whips though. My vet recommends it. I give 1cc per 10lbs of body weight once a month for 2 days straight and it works for me. It costs about $40 for a 500 ml bottle which will last quite awhile dependent upon how many dogs you have. Don't use it on a dog that is about to come in heat that you are planning on breeding, pregnant dogs, or lactating dogs as it can cause birth defects.

My vet talked me into trying Intercepter tablets last year and they worked well and were easy to administer, they get heart, whip, round. but they are presciption and by the time the vet tacs on his markup and office visit you may have to sell a dog or child to pay for them. I just added another dog and Iam going to have to find something a little less expensive this year(not less effective-cheaper) any suggestions, stan

stanimals you are right interceptor is the best all around deal, but can be costly. I may switch to it this spring, My vet told me that he would only require that I do an initial blood test to ensure that the dogs do not have heartworms, and that I get the
interceptor from him so that he could monitor that I was administering it in the correct manner, he even offered to let me have it at his cost. The only drawback is his office is about 65 miles from my house, but he gives the best prices and deals on everything so I stick with him. Have you tried asking the vet to call in a prescription for you to Petcarerx or someplace like that who will sell you the interceptor at wholesale price? It's worth a shot and all he can say is yes or no. If that doesn't work I would go with valbazen and ivomec.

Hello Darrin
The valbazen does get Tapes, heads as well as the bodies, my vet says it gets everything except whips and heartworms. I just bought a 500ml bottle for 40.00. I have done pretty good with it so far. I just took my pup to the vet yesterday to get his cherry eye taken care of and the vet did a stool sample on him and said that he was crystal clear. I have had my pups on it since they were 4 months old. I would recommend nemex II up until they are at least 4 or 5 months old and then switch to valbazen. I don't have any written documentation on this but it has worked for the 6 pups that I have.

I'm NOT a vet and not recommending but this is my current plan here in GA:
Ivomec Cattle 0.1 cc/10 lbs on the 15 th day of every month (year-round mosquitoes here!).
Valbazen as Big Dog described beginning on the 1st day of each month EXCEPT for October and April when I substitute the three day safeguard treatment.

1 cc of Valbazen per 10 lbs 3 to five days. My vet says five days but that seems a bit much to me. I have been using it 3 days and it has worked great. and Yes, it even gets the heads of the tapes.
I only use this for tapes and ONLY when I see tapes present in the stool. I give Safe guard monthly when I am NOT using Valbazen ut I give Ivomectin monthly reguardlessly for heart worm prevenitive. Like Mr. Terry, I give Valbazen or Safeguard on the first and Ivormectin on the 15th. That way I don't overload the dogs systems.

Southern,
Why not use the Valbazen year-round instead of the Safe-Guard? Is there some drawback to using Valbazen monthly?
I am currently using Ivomec (1/10th cc per 10lbs body weight, I administer orally) at the 1st of every month (for heartworn preventative). At the 15th of every month I administer 2 1/2cc's of Safe-Guard for 3 consecutive days (for intestinal worm preventative).
I have heard some say Safe-Guard will get ALL intestinal worms, then I have heard Safe-Guard will NOT get tapes but will do well with all other intestinal worms. I am to the point I dont know what to believe. However, my vet says my dogs are completely worm free at every visit so far, so evidently the Safe-Guard does pretty well.
Thanks a bunch.

My experience with Valbazen is that it makes some (not all) of my dogs feel bad during and after the three day worming. In a couple of days they feel fine but it seems to be a harsher wormer in comparison to the Safeguard.
I started using Valbazen because the SafeGuard was NOT getting tapes. I was tired of spending $8.00 to $10.00 dollars per dog every time they dogs got the tapes. Happy Jack and Adams No MO was a waste of money to me because it didn't get rid of them so I was buying the tape wormer through the vet.
The Safe Guard is a good gentle wormer that gets everything else. I have never had a dog feel bad and it is almost imposible to overdose them. I have allways gotten clean stools at the vet from Safe Guard.
My vet says Valbazen is a safe and Low toxic wormer however I just go on how my dogs react. I will contenue to use it because it does a good job, but will only use it for tapes.

That is interesting, I will pay a little closer attention to my dogs after deworming them. Thus far I have not seen any difference in them as a matter of fact I dewormed my dogs this week and have taken my dogs out on 2 consecutive daysto run and have noticed nothing different about them. Did all of your dogs appear not to feel well or just 1 or 2? I guess like anything else the side affects may be different on different dogs. I will definitely pay closer attention in the future.
