Post by Joe.R »

My 15 month old beagle is running the rabbit, after 45 minutes or more he comes out leaving the rabbit, looking scare barking loud, and he is afreid of me too, but he stays by my side, after 5 minuts he comes down and he goes back to the other dogs, He does this solo or with the oder dogs, is this Running fits or something else,

Thanks? Joe.R

More than likely the dog is having a running fit.I have a female that used to have them after running hard 30-40 minutes.Eyes look like there going to pop out of their head and tail tucked running around in circles.I cured this by using Nutri-cal.All it is is a sugar inbalance that dogs get. Some people use life-savers and other candy.I like the nutri-cal.I give her a little before running and some more later depending on how hard she has been running.Since i started this she hasn't had another fit.I've recommended this to other people and it works for them.Good luck!

I took my dog out today, before running gave some nutri-cal, and ran for 2 ours, he was fine, so far so good.

Thanks beagler

We call this "hunting dog hypoglycemia." Blood sugar plummets after running awhile. Try feeding 3-4 hours before running. Going to a higher fat food also helps in some cases. There is no proof, but I sometimes wonder if this may be a genetic problem to an extent. Just something else to consider.

Hey Doc, You are correct about this being a genetic trait.I will
not point out any bloodlines or dogs but I traced it back to a
certain dog that was used as a top stud hound.Come to find
out it all started with his mother.I can talk to several people
who have dogs or know someone who has a dog from this
stud hound and they can tell you about the fits in offsprings
from him. Thanks for defining this for me.Alot of vets have
never heard of it.

I would say it is genetic... i owned a hound and he had one once. i thought he just went nuts. owned his half brother and he had them too. Talked to a guy that had several out of the same stud and they all had them... It is not a good experience to witness. Kind of makes me shy away from this certain stud. It is a prominent bloodline that this decended down from in this case too.

Running Fits

Post by Joe.R »

We have two brothers, and they are from top stud, the Sire is IFC, the Dam is FC, out of IFC, One started having the fits at 7 month old, mostly when I ran him solo, thinking he got scare when he was going far, he will came running scare like if someone was chasing him, i will go to him and he was affraid of me, after 5 min, he was fine, now he does it with the pack, I feed him Dimond hi energy 3 times a day, and give him Nutri-cal when I run him, so far 2 times out he din't do it and ran him for 3 hours,
the other brother never did it, so if this is genetic even if the other brother din't do it, that means he can produce pups with Hipoglycemia also. you think I should have him fixed. And ARHA Beagler can you e-mail me the name of the Studs with this trait, at jr11357@msn.com

Thanks? Joe

It's hard to say if your dog will pass it on if you breed him.Seems that it would but that is something to consider when breeding. You can take a dog from the same litter not having them and he could possibly pass that trait to his offspring.I have seen that happen.Your dog might grow out of having the fits.If you should breed him or not that is up to you.If the dog has all the traits you are looking for then give it a shot.I just bred my female that had the fits and the pups are 4 months old now and just started in my enclosure. They are running good without any problems.I will send you a email.

Carry yourself a little sample bottle with maple syrup. Next time you can use that to rub on their gums and bring up their blood sugar. I had a bitch do this to me while she was in her last few days of pregnancy. She was off her feed for a few days, so I attributed it to that. If you dont get the nutrition, then your blood sugar will drop. She was put on Nutri Cal to substitute for what she wasnt eating. She was fine after that. Still it is nerve racking just the same. She just tipped right over on her side, when I picked her up she was a limp noodle in my arms. Made me sick.

I was always told dont feed your dogs before you go hunting, but had just read the very opposite. Thanks for the info Doc S.

You DO NOT want to feed right before running/hunting as it can cause them to bloat. You should feed 3-4 hours prior to running though. Will increase energy and endurance levels in any dog.

I have a dog that does this thing, when not in shape he will have a seizure or something. He'll be found laying down in convulsions with foam coming from his mouth, eyes rolled back in his head.Once he comes out of this,(after a few mins) he'll get up, stagger, walk into trees then be back to normal in a little bit.But i won't run him anymore that day.But once he gets into pretty good shape he doesn't have these things. What is it,running fits or seizures?

Anybody that has seen this happen to a dog will tell you it's not a pretty sight.Just recommend them to try the Nutri-cal and I'm willing to bet it will fix the problem. Some dogs are just more severe than others. It doesn't take much to fix the problem.Give them to much of it and it will hype them up.Sugar in a tube is what i call it.
