Large Knot On Neck HELP !!

Hey guys, I need some help and/or opinions.I looked in the kennel last Thursday and my 18 month old female had a large baseball size lump on the right side of her neck and just behind the jawbone. Never seen anything like this before, and have had beagles all my life. Immediately called the Vet. She said it looks like she is alergic to something, and gave her a big dose of antibiotic, and 5cc of benedryle. Gave me 12 days of oral antibiotics and said to stop by the Pharm and get some human benetryle (25ml) twice aday. I have looked at it close, can't find any injuries or bite marks. I'm really getting worried. Absolutely no change in her condition since the vet visit. Ticks are super bad in this central Ohio area ? But no snakes to worry about. Her spirit is good along with her appetite and water consumption. Has anyone else experienced this before? What should I do?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks !! Marty D.

It sounds like she has a Cist from a tree thorn. I have had this problem with alot of dogs because the property we run is loaded. Well I use Cephalexin 250mg 3x a day, and when the cist pops clean it with rubbing alchohol or peroxide and use a medicated spray on it and always keep it clean. If this is your problem then it will look worse then it actually is and it will heal over in about 2-3 weeks and should start growing the hair back. Good Luck!

I agree, it could be an abcess from a stick or thorn. Could possibly still even be in there. My male got a huge lump on his throat this past season, turns out there was a stick in his neck and the infection pushed it out.

if its abscess from getting stuck with something there will be a soft spot on it. and you can lance it there.
my female had one one time. on her side . the vet shaved the area cut it on top and bottom
flushed it out , put a big ol drain tube in it. and 1 or 2 weeks worth of antibiotic shots.
he had me pull the tube out after 3 of 4 days.

Had the same thing on one of mine, thats what the vet found when he checked her out.

It's an infection of the gland in her neck, when it gets ripe, she will scratch it open if the antibiotics don't take it down.

This why the Doc feels the side of your neck and under your arms when you go in sick, we got glands that collect the infection also.

I was running one last Wed. and in a county thst supposedly dont have poisenous snakes. He fell out of the race and came and stood by me. Tried to send him back in and he just looked at me. Within a few minutes he had a lump as big as a baseball or bigger. I gave him benadryl and had to leave for work. The lump was pretty hard. The next day it had gone down some and felt softer but was purple. I t has gone down now to an egg size knot which is hard. He finally is acting pretty good but still has the knot. Ive not been able to find any marks on his neck.?????????

i can't believe this thread. i woke up sunday morning to go run the hounds. i get to the kennel and found my male with a giant ball under his throat. i didn't have a freakin clue what the heck it was. I took him to the emergency vet. He was running a fever of 104. vet gave him a shot to get the fever down and a shot for the swelling. the vet didn't know exactly what it was.

i checked him this morning. he was happy active ate 2cups of food i saw him drink water. i gave him his meds that i'm suppose to give him twice a day. the large ball under this throat was hard the first day i saw it. this morning it felt spongy. i'm suppose to take him to the vet when I get home from work for a check up.

this is weird taht you made this thread about it. I have the same thing happen to me.

If you have them on meds then there really isnt anything else they can do for it at the vet so may be waisting your money if you take them back. Just make sure you clean it good a couple times a day when it busts open and it will be fine in a couple weeks.

Thx for all the fast replys, and with what I have read, it sounds like I shouldn't waste any more money at the vet. If that is the case, can anyone suggest a more powerful antibiotic other than "BAYTRIL- #68", which she is currently on for another 9 days. If I decide to lance, when should I do it? Or, should I just let it bust and clean it.

i'll let you know what my vet says later today. i'm going after work. my vet said it was disolve back into his body. he never wanted to cut it open. which it did get spongy so its probably breaking down. he gave him a cortisone shot.


hes got my dog on amoxycilyn not sure if i spelled that right. its a liquid. twice a day in the mouth. 1.5cc

i checked my dog when i got home. the large ball now feels like a large ball of water. maybe it needs to be drained.

i'll let you guys know what the vets says.

All these swollen places on the neck appear to be abcesses to me. Most generally when a lymphnode (gland) is swollen it is hard until it fights off and dissolves the infection in the area that specific lymphnode regulates. All parts of the body have lymphnodes that drain infection from that specifric area and whenever something foreign intrudes that area the lymphnode goes to work fighting it. A good example of a swollen lymphnode would be when someone gets a case of the mumps. The parotid lymphnode under the jaw bone swells up just as it does when you get a bad sore throat or tonsilitis. Sometimes the gland gets as hard as a rock but if the swollen area is pliable or mushy it is normally an abcess, cyst or a blood blister. I have drained them by simply sticking them with a needle. Be careful though, if the swollen place is pliable but real tight the pus may explode out of it and you may be wearing it.
