A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
You really need to get out some and see some different dogs run, some southern cottontail bred dogs too. Now I own fast, LP style dogs, mostly from northern lines, but there are several lines of the "3 feet on the ground at all times, mouthy, trash running, never get any better after they turn a year old and used up by the time they turn 5, southern breed cottontail hounds" as you so arrogantly put it that can run a great rabbit. Their speed may not be "fast" but there are several lines that can push a rabbit at a good upper-medium speed as better than anything out there!
Hey Darrin I know where I can find some 6 and 7 year old southern cottontail runners that will take a lot of dogs to school, Their owners got rid of some big name northern breed expensive hounds and I'll certainly not trash any lines here but they kept those other southern dogs even grade dogs at that, and as for trash running Thats not a problem. So if anyone wants to see them I can probably arrange to get the owner to let you see them run.If not we will just run a couple of my culls.
I aplologize, I believe I left cold trailing...lol
and Darrin, if you like those southern breed hounds so well, why are you running sock it to me hounds? Maybe for the same reason I am not!!!!
Once upon a time, a man asked a girl " Will you marry me?" The girl said " NO." and the guy lived happily ever after and ran his dogs as much as he wanted to.
Chris,
Are you trying to prove a point here or what? I tried to dismiss you as just trying to be funny, but I'm kinda wondering now.
Anything else you want to bash? The guy asked a simple question and it didn't call for bashing southern bred hounds. He just wanted to know if a hare hound could make it as a cottontail hound. Just say yes and move on.
That's all that needs said.
We don't need to say that some full grown hare hounds that have never seen a cottontail sometimes have a tough time getting in the thick stuff and jumping a rabbit. We don't need to say that sometimes the heat bothers some of the harehound breeds. We don't need to say that swamp rabbits sometimes give them fits due to them hitting the water. We don't need to say that they sometimes over run the check area. We don't need to say some dogs are good on both hare and cottontail, while others are a little more specialized due to the region they were born in and the traits that were bred into them.
All we needed to say was that,"Yes, hare bred hounds can come to the south and make fine cottontail hounds."
If you were just trying to dismiss me as being funny, then keep your comments directed at me to yourself from now on. Disagreeing on a type of dog is one thing, trying to cut someone down is another.
YES, A HARE HOUND CAN RUN A GREAT COTTONTAIL.
Now thats funny. Have a great day.

A word of caution; some of today's hare hounds that have been bred for nothing but speed can't run a hare let alone a cottontail. They're far too competative. Take a line running hare hound with nose and line control and you'll have more fun than you could ever imagine when he winds up on a cottontail. Course the same could be said for a poor running, pottering, cottontail bred hound. He simply can't run a rabbit. A good one can get the game around regardless.
I have USED to own two harebred hounds from a well-know line that COULD NOT run a SOUTHERN cottontail in the redbriars! Oh, they would jump him. However, he would make a cut every 40 yards and they were 50 plus yds. off the end before they knew he was gone and tounguing all the way! Then they would swing out, make a fifty yard wide circle and eventually jump him again. The last time I took them out, I saw the rabbit five times as the pair "herded" him. He would come from one direction and they would come by from another! Quite an ugly sight in my opinion! They are now the pride and joy of a fox hunting friend. I am not saying that all harebred hounds are that way but they were for sure.
Hi all.You no Chuck the same could be said about them little cottontail running hounds. You all have to remember these 2 types of hound are different in just about every way,a cottontail hound can jump and run 10 rabbits in 1hr on times where as a hare hound can jump and run 1 hare hare for 10hr most cottontail hounds can do that.I personally don't give much for the cottontail type hounds not running it down but not my style just like a hare hound its not what another one may want.So look at it from both sides you say a hare hound can't take the heat down south ,this may be true but I am very sure them little cottontail hounds can't run in -30c so there ya go different style hounds.Take care Dan.
I see where you are coming from and if I ever move where there are hare or the terrain is more open, I may want harebred hounds. However, for here, cottontails in the briars and bluetails in the marshes are my ONLY options within reasonable driving distance. I do not see how hare hunting could be any better or any more fun anyhow! If it is, I could not stand it! Have a GREAT season this year!
Well we must be breeding a totally Different kinda hound here in the Northwest!! Our Little Cottontail Hounds Also Run Snowshoe and Jackrabbits!!! We have Eastern Cottontail, Pygmy Rabbits, brush Bunnies ( A little Smaller Cottontail) Blacktailed Jackrabbits and Snowshoe hair! We run In 80 degree weather in the summers and down to -30 in the winter!! we may have 3 inches of snow in the valley and 3 ft in the foot hills ours seem to adjust real Well to both conditions. We run in Rainforest on the coast Blackberries in the Valley and sage brush in the high Mountain Desert. I have seen a lot of Branko Bred Dogs run out here (From Krapans) and they sem to do fine. Have also Seen trakarab,Bowhill,Yellowcreek, Whiteacres,Circle C to Shaw!!! And they all seem to be able to do it. So just seems to me that it would be in the training and what the hound is used to runnin. We will Run Cottontail on saturday morning Drive 3 hrs and Run Snoshow in the afternoon get up on Sunday drive 2 hrs and Run Jackrabbits So in my opinion its all in the way they are trained or what they are brought up to run!! Am I wrong?
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
