I had an absolute blast!!! Couldn't have asked for better company and friends. We arrived in Dexter Ga. about 8:30 Thursday night and got settled in. It was hot and was supposed to be hot through Friday but we were going to deal with it. Woke up Friday morning to a balmy 72 degrees and loaded my 4 females and one of my buddy's males. We drove to the spot which was planted pines about 10-12 feet tall with broomstraw and briars thick between the rows. The wetter spots had the briars and a green bush that reminded me of an azalea. We jumped a rabbit pretty quick and it made a tight circle and was shot. We watered the dogs down and skinned the rabbit and were actually talking about leaving due to the temps when another guy jumped a rabbit. We put the dogs on it and they lost it in some water. While looking for that rabbit our hunt was rudely interrupted......I'll get to that in another post. So we loaded dogs and went back the house. There is an over grown field across form the house and we couldn't sit in the house any longer. After resting the dogs we crossed the street and had a rabbit up within minutes and my girls laid it to it even in the high winds. I killed the rabbit on it's second circle. Jumped one more that they circled once before it crossed a field and got into a log pile. The dogs were able to move the rabbit out and it too was killed. The dogs were done by then, it was 83 degrees, so we headed to the house to clean rabbits, cook and partake in some cold adult beverages.
Here is the cover from Friday.
Friday night the cold front blew in and we had some rain and cooler temps. Started Saturday at 43 degrees. We went back to teh planted pines and ran my buddies male dogs in the morning, we jumped 9 and killed 4 before breaking for lunch and switching packs. This stuff was thick so getting shots was tough. It sure was fun though being somewhere that had that many rabbits. After lunch we switched pack and put my girls down and jumped 5 and killed 1 before calling it quits. With so many rabbits even when the dogs would lose one or we would kill one, someone would have one they jumped marked and the race was on again. Some cover from Saturday.
We hunted a half day in a small clear cut behind the house Sunday morning and killed 2 out of 3.
All in all I had an amazing time with great friends and some awesome dogs. 10 rabbits might not seem like many but it is never about the numbers for me. I would make that trip again in a heart beat and hope to get invited back next season.
