What makes a ............
Guys, not kidding here, and i post a lot of sarcastic humor in other posts, like bells or no bells, but need to know.......... A female went up for sale on RABBITHUNTINGONLINE website for sale IFC Maple Lane Rockette for 14k and she is also bred. I understand Butkus sold for a chunk of change a couple times but you can stud him out many times a year for 300ish. What makes a female worth 14k??? You cant sell pups out of her that much or she'd always be having pups not running. This female could be the best dog in the states for all i know, never heard of her, but 14k for a female??? So question is, ...... is it me or does that seem high and how much would a pup sell for $600 or $800???

Re: What makes a ............
The question I would ask myself is how much would I spend to better my breeding program? Is this female worth this much money? I would watch her run first and see her strong and weak pts. Try and figure what my line lacks and see if this female could improve what my kennel lacks.....those questions would determine if she is worth it. I have heard it on here many times that a female will throw more into their pups than the stud.

Re: What makes a ............
oh ive answered that question myself already, when i saw it i belly laughed and believe me i have a bit of a belly so it jiggled. With that being said IMO you can surely improve your breeding by spending a lot less than 14k, my question was is that high for a female, no calculated gambling risk even being considered here. I know personally theres grade dogs that can probably out hunt, run, jump, and check that dog but dont have the papers or money behind them. Was also wondering what makes her so good. Im not trying to take anything away from the owner or the dog, just IMO thats A HIGH PRICE TAG for a bred IFC female, but what do i know.

Re: What makes a ............
Well likeemfast if you want to get your money back out of a pup I would sell it for 15k to cover feed, meds, and time. You did not mention age of this hound or any other information to lead to a price but with someone with deep pockets they might believe they are getting it all for this price. I guess its like selling cars ask a lot take a little less.

I would scrutinize the ped and then watch her run I believe she is an outcross
bitch does she match what you have in your yard? First are you a breeder or
do you just want to sell pups from an International FC
to get your money back if that is what is on your mind then how many pups
will you have to sell
how many pups can you get out of her at 5 years old ?
if your bred her each season probably 6 litters tops?
will people be interested in that particular bloodline?
average litter being 5 per for a beagle 6 litters will be 30 pups
how much for a pup lets see 30 x 500 will be 15k suppose you keep 4 or five yourself
who will pay the 500 for a pup

If she was sold for that I guess someone saw something that they wanted? To me that's a lot for a dog, but hey if ya got it and don't mind spending it then, why not?

Everyone is constantly questioning on here what a FC or IFC is worth....someone lists one for sale and now the question is "why so high".

Good for them I hope they get it maybe they will make back most of what they have invested in dogs to get one finished. You guys think this is crazy go look up some coon hounds and what the good ones sell for they are more then double or triple that. You can't take the money with you so why not spend it on something you love to do. Good luck to the seller and the buyer hope it works out for them both.

Bradh, i agree, good luck to them in selling her, hope they get it, just wont be me. Apples to apples here, no coon dogs allowed. Just in past when big dollars have been paid that i know of its been studs. We all know men are worth more than women.

Re: What makes a ............
I just did some quick math using generalizations on a dog finishing for IFC what I would consider quickly (I would say I am very low on the number of trials and number of years of solid training).....AKC guys look away now and do not read any further for fear of sickness!!!
20 US Trials x $300 (food, gas, entry, hotel) = $6000
15 CN Trials x $300 = $4500
Training....Using 2years to get it all done so 104wks x 20hr min x $5 (cheap) = $10,400
So right now the $$ the current owner put into finishing the hound for IFC = $20,900
Add stud fee for current litter @ $250
You get the litter of pups 6 x $300 = $1800
So the total value of this hound should be $22,950 for the current owner to only recoupe his money.
How's that $14k looking now.....Even if you take out the training time you are still into the 5 digit category.

A friend of mine once turned down 5k for a male dog that had never been trialed. I thought he was crazy!!! 14k for a female, I don't care how she is bred or what she is bred to!! That is too much cash for a dog!!!! When I grouse hunted I had another friend turn down 10k for a male dog that was 11 years old!! I know he was CRAZY!!! Both were excellent dogs in their own right but that is alot of cash to a poor man like me. Just my opinion and you all know how opinions are.

Re: What makes a ............
with that math ok, but i wouldnt want a IFC that took 35 trials to finish. I could win at least 5 races of 100yards if i ran enough of them and im not that fast.

Re: What makes a ............
You seriously think 20 trials to finish for FC is bad? The average entry number for the 15" female classes is probably 20 or so.....if the female won every single trial she was entered in, it would still take 6 to finish.
I just did a slight breakdown and if the female got 3 wins, 3 seconds, and 4 thirds....that is 10 trials and I would say that would be an awesome run at it and probably a rarity because every dog is going to have a bad day and not place.
I just guessed at the Canada numbers because I have never ran a dog up there....I may be high on that
Trust me though....it is sickening to look at the cost to finish a dog, even if it finishes quick. You better love the sport and love the dog you are running because you will never see that money back.

Re: What makes a ............
Ohiohntr, i dont even know what it takes to finish in the states let alone Canada altho i have had some field champs already, but when i get them its gun hunting they go, never to see a trial again except for the one they run in when i take them hunting with me myself and i. I understand what your saying bout cost to finish a hound too. If i own a hound for say 3 years and never trial her but gun hunt her and pleasure run her thru the year and sell her for $1000 to another hunter, did i make money? nope i guess i did not, gas, feed, vet bills time and training. I guess Joe should of sold Butkus for 25k then, maybe 30k, if we use that logic.
