I have been involved in measuring dogs at a couple hunts now. I can tell you that measuring some dogs in a "natural stance" is next to impossible. When you bring some dogs into a crowded room, full of stangers, lift them up on a table, or just run them under something that looks like a gillotine, they cow down. And sometimes pee all over the place. Two guys holding him up on his feet so you don't get an 8" measurement on a laying down dog, is NOT a "natural stance". But, is all you can get in a reasonable amount of time, before a hunt. My point is, some dogs are very hard to get a consistent measurement from one club to the next. I can easily see how two honest guys, measuring dogs, can get very different measurements on the same dog. A 14 3/4 dog could get measured over, or a 15 1/4 " dog could get through. I think as breed inspectors, we are going to have to use a little common sense.

I don't travel to hunts all over the country like I used to. And I seldom go to the large hunts anymore. Maybe oversized dogs are a major problem, maybe they are not. But, like it or not, if you want to compete, measuring all the dogs, is a rule that we have to live with, for now.

Remember, things can always change. Some of you that have been in the ARHA for a while, remember when all competition dogs had to have a current Brucelosis test before they could compete in a hunt. After a couple years it was generally agreed that this, new rule, was unnecessary. The rule was and done away with. It is my hope that measuring every dog at every hunt, is something that soon goes the way of the mandated Brucelosis testing.

There will be another rules meeting coming up pretty soon!

According to their rules the dogs have to be measured on the ground or at floor level

seen a guy measure 30 some sat at fcbc and everyone agreed with his measueing, alot of ppl has had their dogs to several other hunts including akc and he matched them perfect, shows me that over or under he was measuring right, now if all clubs had a inspecter that was batting 500 or close this rule wouldnt be half as scarry to haul a hound thats close around to hunts so far off! witch as i say i have no worrys one is 14 5/8ths witch i guiss could but should never measure out,the other two im running now are 13.5in gypes.....

PKC hunt LLoyd Grey challenges a dog at the staging area. Man measurers dog in LLoyd gets beat sends a young man over and tells the guy that mesurers dog in I CANT BELIEVE U LET A OVER SIZE DOG BEAT ME. Man says tell your grandfather that if that 1 inch beat him in a hour hunt he needs a better dog. END OF STORY!

thats exsactly right 1in isnt getting one bit of advantage,i believe this rule has been put in place "to better the breed" personally i dont mind the rule if they could get all inspecters on the same page measuring, thats the big problem with the rule i have. now back to the 1in beating him, thats not the reason, the dog was eather the better dog or the cards fell in the right place. ALL DOGS HAS THEIR DAY!!!!! all the coment about "couldnt believe he let a 16in hound beat him" was was an exscuse..im sorry but me and everyone on this board knows 1in isnt going to beat you in a cast,in my oppionion not in an all day cast.if the dog measured in then bye the rules that dog won fair and squire and he never had no advantage, now woman may say an inch matters but in beagles bullcrap!

What concerns me is that the man that measured him knew he was 16'' and let him hunt anyway..

And you know he is 16" because a sore loser says so?

One of the things I have enjoyed so far about PKC is the more laid back attitude. It reminds me of LP back when I first started. Funny how you have the same people trying to make it miserable for everyone no matter what association. Piketon has a great club and does a great job. If the breed inspector measured the dog in, that is good enough for me.

Some people spread happiness wherever they go. Other people spread happiness whenever they go. This is one of the three stories being told about an owner at that hunt who was upset. Figure it out. :D

Your rambling CAPS LOCK post reminds me of Little Pack right now--lots of opinions and anger and not much reason or understanding.

Talk about Frank if you like but at least he has guts enough to speak his mind. And he works to have a successful club instead of just showing up at hunts and causing problems.

One thing for sure, this never ending post is as screwed up as the whole measuring fiasco in LP.
