Dingus is the foundation for most harehounds, doubt he ever saw a cottontail.

Just an FYI, Dingus Macrae was trained on Cottontail and trialed on Hare.

Try ARHA.com
Go to the Progressive Pack hunters section on the Q/A board.
You'll probably find that the "Jim Dandy, Tadpole, Bigwheel" are what you're looking for.
Medium speed dogs that love briars and run steady w/o long breakdowns.
They're mainly the original Weir Creek and Black Creek bred hounds.
The AKC UBGF dogs are also cottontail dogs but you'll sacrifice jump ability for more line control.

good luck,
LPB

Rake has ran with the best here lately.. And he can stroke right with them when he has too. Rake is truly a all around rabbit dog ....... I've killed a bunch of rabbits to him in the last few weeks........

Look at the Laneline dogs. Bred to bring the cottontail to the gun.
Laneline Yellow Creek Dingus is a cottontail beagle deluxe.

espo website has med - upper med speed dogs forsale. I was in the same position you were in. Fast hounds just wastn workn here where i live but its extremely thick. I still like excitement of hard hittn harehounds and if i had runnin in wide open country i would still have them. Beagles forsale online is another site to find med speed dogd

I have a hard time buying into the harehound/cottontail hound theory. I feel any dog worth feeding should be able to gear up or down to run either and still have the brains to know where to find and jump both once you cut them loose.
I run both and cant keep separate packs.

I like the nose and drive that Hare blood produces but I also like the close check and line control the cottontail bloodlines carry. Most of my dogs are are cross on both blood lines and I think what I'm running has good speed but are still close enough to lock on to a cottontail. I'm in no way saying they are the best but I like them. I'm always trying to breed for a combination of both.......Deerhost

Get ahold of Neil Kimbrel, he owns FC Kick em up Kane. A very hard hunting dog that is progressive pack bred, but a hound that can lead a pack of faster dogs. He is a great dog with a million dollar chop mouth. He's a good jump dog and is accurate with his mouth and on the line. He can gear up or down. This hound adjusts to what the conditions give him. Just a little over 13 inches, he competed with some of the best 15 inch males. A son of Pea Ridge Mr. Big Wheel. Big Wheel X Gunsmoke Red Pepper II. You won't be disappointed when you go watch this hound go.

Good luck!

Come on Tony: "Is it possible to get great speed and drive but elminate all the cutting and swinging? Just wandering"

Go read what Spruce Ridge said. If you are going to run with the boys, you got to have a dog with enough speed and mouth to make you look good. Hare hound/cottontail makes no difference. I have a 16 month old pup here now out of the Spruce Ridge breeding program and he will hunt and run with anything without cutting or being ugly. My dogs absolutely have to compete but I would rather have them do it without the negative side affects.

Just saying.

This is as close to perfect as you could ever get. I may not have as much experience as some but I have a lot. The only caveat I could add to your statement for Tony 83 is to cull the ones that don't fit your style. Harehound/cottontail controversy to me is just a ready made excuse for running second fiddle.

Dutch is a fine looking hound too . I'd love to have gotten to try a pup from Dutch and Pike Ridges Snowflake Belle ? female .
