Thought she was a lost cause

Well my female that I couldnt get to start with 15 trips out finally opened on her first wild rabbit today!!! She ran fairly well and seems to use her mouth correctly. The conditions were dry and cold so I was impressed with her. This dog has a long way to go but its a start, I actually had found a new home for her this week and decided to take her out today and it was like she just flipped on the switch. It got dark out before I got pictures so I had to take pics in the garage. We jumped 8 today and killed 1. I had a friend with that hadnt hunted with dogs before so I let him do most of the shooting, he had a .22 and wasnt real accurate with it but he had fun. I ended up shooting the one we did shoot. Hope the pics show up!

Yeah she put a big ole smile on my face when she jumped, opened and ran that first rabbit. Its gonna be almost 50 degrees here the next few days, I wish I didnt have to work. Its would be great to be out in this weather.

That was probably the key, when she jumped her own rabbit. Good luck with her and keep feeding her rabbit tracks.

Thanks guys, im gonna keep hunting her as much as I possibly can, may have to start hunting her at night cuz I dont get to hunt days during the week. I caught her another rabbit today, im gonna take it out and hide it in the switch grass in the yard tomorrow night and make her find it, then Ill let him out for her. I did that same thing on friday and thats all it took to make her start. If I do it one more time I hope it really gets her excited about running. Ive never run at night before so Ill have to get used to that.

How old was your dog? I have 2 that are 13mos. that I am having a hard time getting started. About ready to find them a home but may try to trap one. Just about out of ideas. Glad she opened up for you and hope she continues to progress.

She was born 6-7-10. I had a home found for her and the guy backed out last week. I was done with her. I caught a rabbit on friday and let her bark at it in the wire trap, then dumped it right in her face and thats all it took. She has a long ways to go but it helped me get her started. Try it before you give up. Good luck.

Congratulations on a great day! If I've learned anything in my journey so far with beagles it's that time fixes most problems.

I have two 18 mo old(brothers) and one just jumped and ran first rabbit 2 weeks ago. The other was with him and look like it was trying. I was about ready to give up on both. Going to put in some more time on them. Hopefully, they turn out good.
