Truly sorry to offend about "final cull",I will be more discreet in future.I have given away several beagles in the past but they were either sold later for a profit using my kennel name or tied to a chain and never let out to run."This dog is scared of his own shadow and would not make a pet".

When Final Culling best to follow the three S rule given to me by a friend from this board and not get anyones opinion. If you are asking if a dog needs to be culled you probably already have the answer.
1. Shoot
2. Shovel
3. Shut UP

Mason said all that need be said on the subject.

No, I don't think it's rash or an extreme conclusion. To "Final Cull" a dog that is "timid" (which is what was originally said) is rediculos. That's what I think and I'll say it every single time!! Now, if it bites people and its dangerous to people or kids its a whole different story and those are 2 completely different dogs.
My point is that as soon as someone said something about it, the whole story changed on what kind of a dog it was.

I agree, and most gave him the credit of having the good judgement to make the right call. It was after he made the comment of the dog being afraid of it's own shadow and not making a good pet, that you deemed he had "no business being around dogs". To me, that kind of statement is rash and unfounded, you don't know this man. His post speaks of someone who has had a good bit of experience at handling hounds and dealing with people, I have to give him credit for at least that, even though I don't know him either...Patch
The female that I referred to in my previous post was TIMID but NEVER showed any signs of biting anyone let alone me, the one that fed her. I had put her on a long check cord, talked to her , pulled her to me and gave her treats. I put her on a lead and sat down under a tree constantly pulling her to me and roller her onto her side to pet and rub her to try to make up to her. Never did she even remotely act like she wanted to bite me. I say that I learned something that day and had been around hounds my entire life. You NEVER know what is on the mind of a TIMID dog and it can happen at any time. I have a 3 yr old male right now that I have owned since he was 7 months that is very timid in and around the kennel. He is a really nice rabbit dog that you can even call into a jumped rabbit quicker then any that I have but when it's time to go he is hard to catch. I can catch him but not without some coaxing. He's a real nice medium to upper med. rabbit dog and I like him but if he ever even growls at me he will join the female that bit me.
Sad to say but, if the fella is NOT suitable to be around kids and a possiblity lurks of a potential biter, yes a ticket to doggy heaven is in order. I am faced with it on two dogs (not beagles) myself, now 2 yrs old and one I bottle fed as the litter was large. It will be a sad, sad day but why let someone get hurt....?

I'm from the coondog world, and have been around beagles for 10 years or so. I know coondogs are culled if they don't stay treed or if there even week tree dogs, timid, growly around other dogs, or even bark to much in the yard. I was suprised to see the oposition to this original post, but then again there are houndsman accross this great nation reading it and you have to expect a multitude of responces good, bad, or indifferent.
I do know that culling sould never be a public topic and am fully aware that the anti hunters read these forums as well. I don't like giving them ammo! Furthermore I know a guy in another town who went to jail killing one of his own dogs. Food for thought. Even though I SUPPORT culling.

Beyond Me
It is beyond me why a grown man would ask a group of strangers what to do with his dog!! Today I gave a bitch I paid a good price for that had a bad mouth to a single mother and teenage daughter they couldn't have been happier.Other times I have decided an animal should be put down I don't tell anyone but my wife who helps with the dogs I tell the kids I gave them away.If you aren't sure give it away anyone with half a brain knows when his dog needs to be put down!
The last time I checked, this board was intended to learn about beagling.
Sometimes we say or ask something on here that we probably wished we wouldn't have, but that's what makes us human. We make mistakes, say the wrong thing, have different opinions, run our mouths, all kinds of quirky little things that are prime examples of our propensity to be less than perfect human beings. Having said that, calling someone a degrading name or treating them in some other deragotory manner is also uncalled for to say the least.
A while back I found myself right in the middle of a peeing contest concerning the proper and ethical ways to dispatch coyotes. I said some things that I should not have and do regret having said them. However, I learned from it, made it right with those offended and have carried on.
It's hard sometimes to not say something when you may be somewhat passionate about the subject matter, but we must remember that we all have something in common or we wouldn't be here in the first place.
Culling is and never will be a wonderful topic, since no matter where you stand the task is never easy or pleasant, but let's still respect one another whether we agree or not.
