hunting with 410 pistol
How many of you rabbit hunt with a 410 pistol. I was thinking about getting one to make things more challenging. How effective are they on hare and what kind of range do they have?

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
I just started using one, I love it. It def makes it more challenging and fun. I shot and rolled a cottontail yesterday at 20yds like it was nothing. Great range for a 10" barrel. I'm very happy with it. So if you can, buy one!

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
I have hunted hare for 6 yrs now with nothing but a pistol. Started with the super comanche and then upgraded to a TC contender with a 12" barrel. Once you finally commit to a pistol, i don't think you will ever go back to a long gun. I feel you can consistently take rabbits out to 25 yds or so.

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
I use a Super 16 Contender. 30-40 yards no problem, actually any shot I would take with a long gun. Pretty much all I carry anymore. It is not really much of a handicap except for being a single shot and I am getting good at reloading!

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
Thanks for the info. What size shot are you using on hare? I usualy always use my 20 ga with 7 1/2's and that is a good combination for me i have never used a 410 on rabbits so i have no idea what size shot to use. All i wood be hunting is snowshoe hare we have no cottontails up here.

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
Yes, I have a TC contender with the 10" barrel. I shoot the #6 shot and find that works pretty good. Whether im shooting 2-1/2" or 3" shells I always shoot hi brass loads because they have the same amount of powder, the only difference is the amount of shot in the cartridge.MAINESNOWSHOEHUNTER wrote:MI-BEAGLER is your pistol a tc contender? Re: hunting with 410 pistol
I have found 3" 5 shot to work best for me.

3 or 2 1/2 in #6 or #5 shot pattern your contender each one is different. I have 14 and mine likes 3s two buddies have a 14 and a 12 and theirs both like 2 1/2.

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
I have a TC super 14 that shoots 3" #5's the best. Can't find them any more though. Used to find Federal #5 shot at Cabelas in southern Michigan , but they stopped carrying them last I checked. What brand of shell do you get your 5's in and where do you find them ?fasttrackpa wrote:I have found 3" 5 shot to work best for me.

Re: hunting with 410 pistol
i shoot the tc super 14 as well... love it. i had the tc in the 10in version before and ive found i actually like the super 14 alot better. last time i was in gander mountain in charleston wva at corridor G they had a good selection of 410 shells in all different shot sizes... pricey but a good selection.
Re: hunting with 410 pistol
I have a TC Contender w/ 10" b I love it. I use 3" 6 or 5 shot. I think I can shoot as far as I did with the 410 long gun probably 30 yrds. I orginally said I would use it sometimes, but its so convienient I use it 100% of the time.
