trouble starting a dog

Post by Blayze »

i have a 15 month old feamle that i have wokred quite a bit with,i worked with her alot last winter with my older dog and she just didnt seem to get it i figured it was because she was young, my older dog passed away in the summer so i worked with her trying to get her ready for this season. i had her on rabbits all summer long and she would follow trail for a while but never open up. the last two night i have jumped 9 rabbits for her and all she does is follow where they went but dosent bark. Tonight she jumped a rabbit and was right on it until it crossed the fence she stood at the fence and barked,so i put her on the other side of the fence and she just took off right on the trail for a while and gave up. i trained my last beagle and she picked it right up but this one is being a pain. Any ideas on what to do. i would of though that she would of picked it up by now.

Sounds like the 15 month old dog is going to be a " late bloomer", if she ever does bloom. Dogs are like people, some do what they are supposed to do and others do not. IMO, a Beagle shoul train itself if given the opportunity. Your hound appears to have given every opportunity. Now, it is just a matter of just how much patience do you have. I suggest that you let her go as a pet and then find a proven rabbit dog to buy that suits your likes.

Have you tried trapping one and "teasing" her with it while it is in the trap. Maybe if you get her a little worked up she may open. Then release it and let her run it. When she trails them does she get "rabbity" and excited? She just may need to get a little pumped up to put her over the edge. Just a thought?

i would run with other dogs just because you hove invested so much time already but would get another dog because i dont think she will make it. if she does start running she is so far behind because those first two years are so important. imo in the first year they learn to use their ability in the second they learn to use their brain, your dog is past most of this and cannot run a rabbit. probibly not what you want to hear , sorry. best of luck and let us know what happens.
