To cull or not to cull.
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
This guy says this dog is scared of it's own shadow in my opinion this dog won't make a kid a good pet. Everyone that has had beagles for awhile has had one like this. I have had two which both were gave back to the breeder and it was money lost for me. One pup actually bite me twice. Now if it was my breeding this dog would not end up as a pet. Tom Gross
Culling
It's a thin line between beagle rights and animal rights. If you watch the news you will notice that the sport of foxhunting is close to being illegal in England. Weird sense of right and wrong, killing human babies is acceptable but killing animals is not???
Bet Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and the gang never imagined it would come to this.

I agree with you Hillbilly, Patch Tom and the hard hearted others. Shy or Timid and scared of its own shadow is what makes the decision for me, mure than the no hunt and no bottom.
Small children chase and corner dogs. They also get down in front of a dog and right in its face. A scared dog will bite, and snap their face in defense and then dart off.
Put it to sleep whichever way you want.
Scars on a kids face is not worth it especially when you knew the danger and the new owners don't. They might not have children, but their guest might.
I couildn't sleep with a hurt child on my concience. Child hurt versus dog dead, child wins every time!!!
They look to you!!!

I'm surprised to see how many folks are offended by culling. We take on the role of mother nature when we manipulate the breeding of hounds and we must be prepared to carry out that role.....the strong move on to perpetuate and the weak perish. The idea of giving a dog to a good home sounds great but how many "good" homes are available? Just because someone will take a dog doesn't mean they will give it a good home. Though there are exceptions, hounds that are given away usually end up abused, neglected or abandoned. I would rather put one in the ground than sentence it to a life of misery. The bottom line is that inferior indivduals should not be permitted to taint the breed. If you were to ask the great breeders of the past as well as the present what happens when a hound doesn't measure up, I'll bet all would give you the same answer. That's one of the reasons they are a successful breeder........Comparing animals to people is ridiculous. I love beef, but I've never considered fattening a human up for the kill!
You Do what you have to do for the Good of the breed If As was stated the Dog was That Timid or Shy Then in my opinion it aint Sound. We all must face this at some point how can you all chastize someone for doing what he feels is Right! We all evaluate our Dogs Differently I have heard of Hounds being Put Down or Culled For reasons I would never Do! but then again thats Me To Each his Own!! And I will Not be the one to Judge!! And I agree With John on this one!!!
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

I had a little female several years ago in a litter that was extremely timid but the only one of the 6. I kept her thinking that all the others weren't that way so she'd come out of it. At about 11 months old her and a littermate male got out of the kennel and were running around the yard. I let them do their thing for awhile and then called them to be put up. The male came and I put him back in the kennel but the female would not come to me. My cousin and I tried to coax her to us with dog biscuts but to no avail she would just skirt away with that sorry look in her eye. She eventually went to the lake behind a big oak tree to get a drink so we each got on oppisite sides and tried to coax her with the dog biscuts again. We had her cornered so she just hunkered down and I eased up to her talking real soft and easy. After several minutes of easy talking and throwing her dog biscuts I bent down to snap the lead on her and wham out of the clear blue sky she bit me clear through my hand right between the 1st and 2nd finger. Sure glad I didn't send my problem onto someone else. I brought her in and I took her out.

LOL guys I guess the example I used was kind of like apples to oranges. What I am saying is if the dog doesnt work out for you then find someone it might work out for. One mans junk is anothers treasure. Dont shoot the dog becuase it doesnt have enough foot speed or things like that.
I havent seen in his original post where the dog is terrified. He just said a little shy. Then came back and said it was afraid of his own shadow.I'm not saying give the dog to a kid if you think it might bite him either. My cousins son had over 100 stitches in him after a dog attacked him so I know what could happen.
Think of it this way. If you shot every dog becuase it had a fualt "excluding possibly biting someone or doing harm to you or a family member" then there wouldnt be a beagle left. There isnt one thats perfect.

Now hold on. He said the dog was "timid by my definition", he didn't say it was scared of it's own shadow!! That left a lot of room to work with there.
In a previous post I said if the dog was a man or dog fighter to evaluate the situation and if need be put him down.
I didn't protest culling, I just said to have good reason.
If I think anything be it dog, man, cat, mongoose I could care less what is going to hurt my children I will make a mess of them with my 7mm.
If this dog bites out of fear then yes, the only answer is......BOOM, BOOM, both barrels.

I bought a bitch at 18 months old that is bred very well. I personally saw both parents run and thought I couldn't go wrong. Well she was started at 8 months by the previous owner but he didn't run her much because she was a 13 and he likes 15 inch dogs. I took her to a starting pen to "restart" her. The guy with the starting pen didn't charge me because he thought she was hopeless. I took her out several times after that and she showed no interest at all. BUT one day the light came on!! She has turned out to be a rabbit dawg. She is one of the best jump dogs I have ever had and she can flat out run a rabbit fast and accurate. She has the best traits of both her dam and sire. I'm glad now that I was patient with her. Just something for you to think about.
Well, after getting raked over the coals over your posting, I'll bet you won't mention "final culling" on this board again.
LOL. I would not keep a dog like that and I sure wouldn't recommend breeding one either. I had a female like that many years ago. I raised her from a pup and kept her for almost two years, thinking that she might grow out of it. She didn't.

This is what happens when a guy breeds titles and thinks he is a big time breeder. My honest thinking is a lot of beagle people are closer to puppy mills then breeders. You dont become a breeder by throwing 2 dogs together every 6 months who have been given titles, for the sole purpose of $$, thats a puppy mill. I know a trialer who went thru 30+ puppies last year, just to find 1 that could run in trials. Thats a disrespect and set back to the breed for the sole purpose of winning a trophy
Cull the breeders!
