To cull or not to cull.

I did something I swore last year I would never do again,bought a pup because of his pedigree (Sire is a BIG name who shall remain nameless here,I am not going to begin to bash him or the breeder.)This dog is now a year old and timid by my definition,just can't cure him of it.Has very little hunt,and no bottom.I want to make a decision now on this dog but am I being to hasty?If I give up on him he will not be going anywhere,it will be a final cull.Spare the lecture on doing your homework,I can give it better than anyone and it just makes me madder

I think the tough questions like that should be dealt with in a private manner. I wouldnt feed a dog if it didnt hunt. Just my two cents. As far as the stud dog not producing it happens. I would look at several pups out of that dog and determine his producing power. Identify different females that he is being bred to that are producing the style of dogs you like. Hope it helps.

If that's all that's wrong with him, just give him to a kid or an older person who might enjoy him as a pet. Might want to neuter him first.

To "final cull" just because he doesn't suit you may be a little harsh. Now if he is a man biter or kennel fighter, uh.........yeah probably.

However, my opinion and .50 cents will buy you a cup of coffee.

I agree with Bopeye I always give the duds to a good home and everybody is happy.For just this reason I find it much more economic to buy a derby or older running dog .

I am by no means a expert in this field but, I would give him some more time. I have heard storys of the one they got rid of cause it was not where they thought it should be right then and later they were crankin. To cheap to give 50 cents for coffee, LOL, Paul

I would give the dog away myself. I did something close to the same thing back in july. My neice is as happy as can be with the dog even though she wasnt suited for my needs she suits hers..

How could you "final cull" a dog for those reasons? I will never understand how anyone could show that much disregard for an animal that is just as much a friend as it is a hunter. I see why you logged in under "guest" instead of your name. I am ashamed to be in the same sport with people like you. I completely agree with Bopeye, if it is dangerous to people or other animals, then do what is best for the dog and everything around it. Put it to sleep. I hope you will reconsider. It takes almost no effort to give a beagle away. Post him on the bulletin board at your local supermarket. He will be gone within a week.

I wish "timid" had been explained a little more, timid to one might be what I would consider shy. It is tough to make the call whether or not to cull until that is cleared up. When it comes to an exteremly shy hound and I have seen some real scary ones over the years, I always worry about them being fear biters. The type of dog lives in constant fear should never be placed with anyone as a pet especialy a child. But I would not be pulling the trigger on a hound just because it is not as bold as some others, this would be a shame. I also think that some situations are best handled discretely and while some may fear others getting something for free, at times culling is the only safe option as unpleasant as it is.

I almost didnt post on this but this makes me sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a guy thats going to shoot a dog becuase it doesnt meet his standards. Give the dog to a home that has a kid that will love that dog!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me ask you a ?. None of us are perfect but did our parents cull us becuase of it?

I culled one the winter before last and have wished a hundred times over that I would have given him to someone as a pet.
I could still kick myself for doing it.

Im with you all ,I havent culled my family yet LOL,they are a little timid too when it comes to picking up there rooms,Randy is really timid of housework or yardwork and changing diapers he always feared that!

But I agree if a dog dont work for one may bring a smile and years of happiness to another! I have well lets say more beagles that are my little pets then ones that turned out good enough to trial with,But they all are good runnin dogs just a few who run a little slower probally not enough confindence in there selves,just my thought,,,,Thanks Have a great weekend all!Shannon Beavers

Truly sorry to offend about "final cull",I will be more discreet in future.I have given away several beagles in the past but they were either sold later for a profit using my kennel name or tied to a chain and never let out to run.This dog is scared of his own shadow and would not make a pet.
