Re: A tongue-less Beagle?
Well the next event is that he finally broke the abcess on his neck open a little bit Sunday morning. I was cleaning him up as it was slowly draining. Went and checked on him Sunday evening and cleaned him up again, and I noticed something on the bottom of the abcess. Thought it was bark or something sticking to the blood, touched it and realized its the stick that started this whole ordeal in the first place. It is slowly working its way out of his neck. There is about an inch of it hanging out now, I tried pulling it out the rest of the way but he would not let me. I have no idea how big it is but its about a half inch in diameter.
The vet said if there was anything in there it would work out, so I guess this is a good thing. I just cannot believe the x-ray didn't show it in there. I personally looked at the x-ray when the vet took it the first day and saw nothing, I did not think it was in there. Hopefully, he'll get it worked the rest of the way out today. I still have him on 2 antibiotics.

Re: A tongue-less Beagle?
This is the first I've read of this post but thought I would chime in. Sounds to me that from the start the vet missed the stick that was trust down the dogs throat. The so called "air" that was seen on the x-ray was more likely the section of stick in my mind, and with it remaining in there will continue to cause infection. If it is a half inch in diameter and when you get it out is as long as the "air" on the x-ray" I guess you will know for sure. In the meantime I would not wait around for it to "work it's way out" as if it were a sliver or thorn. I would call the vet and plead my case in a respectful way that this should not have been missed and have him make things right from here with no extra charges to you. It seems that any vet would hate to miss something as big as you describe, and have you and your hound put though the extra suffering and worry, and would be reluctant to add additional expense on top. Good luck to you and your hound.

I agreee with NewYorkHillbilly! That vet should rush you in there and do what is needed to take care of this.Knowing he did'nt catch it is incentive enough to make it right with ya now.....Getting it out and put'n a drain tube in is what I would exspect......I also want to say that your devotion to this dog is awsome to see. They become a huge part of us and know how you feel about this fella.....Seems like the underly'n poblem has finally surfaced.getting the stick out and continue'n the antibiotics should start turn'n in your favor soon.......

Re: A tongue-less Beagle?
Called the vet yesterday morning after my post. He told me it would not hurt anything to try to pull the stick out, or if I didn't feel comfortable doing that to just bring him in and he'd take care of it. Well I get home from work, and as expected, the dog (or his brother) took care of himself. The stick was out, wasn't sure how long it was but all that was left was a hole in the bottom of the abcess where the stick was.
It drained out pretty good. Still a little rough looking where he was shaved and now itching it, causing it to bleed some. I cleaned him up and put some EMT gel on the wound, it seemed pretty sensitive to him but I did the best I could. He was supposed to finish up his liquid Amoxicyllin and Clindamycin antibiotics last night. I just happen to have extra of both so I'm going to keep him on the both of them, once a day, til the abcess/wound heals up.
On a better note the dog is eating like crazy and putting on some good weight. He's eating kibble now after I soak it down in water for about an hour. Takes him a little longer to eat it but still looks better every day. I figure as soon as this wound on his neck is healed up, it's time to get this boy ready for PA hare season!!

The swelling and infection is almost gone within a day of that getting out of there. Soon as that hole heals up he's back to running!
He actually got loose last night while I was feeding him, jumped a rabbit shortly there after. Him, his brother and my 6 month old female all took off, pounding. I couldn't catch them, all I could do was sit there and listen. When i finally got him back I made sure I cleaned the wound up real good and dressed it up. He can still hammer a bunny, that has been confirmed!!!

Re: A tongue-less Beagle?
Well, It'll be one month Saturday since my dog Mack got hurt and ended in losing his tongue. His neck where the stick came out is now completely healed other than it has no fur, his tongue is fully healed closed also.
So I said what the heck, I got his shocker out and called him over, as soon as he saw it he lost his mind. I thought he was going to cease up he was shaking so bad from excitement, he loves that collar, he knows what it means.
I know more than got it latched and the dude was out the door, down our shooting range and hit the lone briar patch on our property at about mach 2. It wasn't 15 seconds and he lights up the woods like he just saw bigfoot! All 3 of my dogs together again, round and round. I let him run around for 20 minutes and called him in. At this point he's covered in blood and I'm like WTF? Well he was just whipping his tail so hard it was tossing blood all over him, lol. The dog needs a kevlar suit.
Gave him a bowl of water, 1st time I saw him drink. He just buried his lower jaw and moved his lips, sorta sucked it in like a horse does. Sounds just like a dog with a tongue.
Needless to say, training has begun again, hare season in 3 weeks!

I've got that question from a lot of people. He sounds identical to before he got hurt. Still has a huge coon dog howl that turns into a chop when he is really rolling on it.
