My son's first buck w/ pics

Post by sidebyside »

Opening day of Michigan's firearm deer season didn't last long for my son and I. Although, it didn't start out great. I kept him out of school and we had a great morning together. Got up around 430, made a nice breakfast and we were on our way. Arrived at the hunting spot around 5:55. Which was perfect. We were both in our long johns so we jumped out of the truck to grab our stuff to get dressed. And wouldn't you know it, I forgot the container that had all our clothes in it! I had no choice but to go back and get it. We finally got back to the spot around 655. The sun was pretty much up and we were silhouetted as we walked to the blind. Not exactly the way you like to start the hunt. As we approach the food plot, we could see white tails bounding everywhere. We got in the blind around 715 with little hope of seeing a deer anytime soon. By 720 this buck was on the ground and we were posing for pictures. When the buck came out, i told him it was a nice eight. He told me that he wanted to wait for something bigger. I laughed and told him to get this first one under his belt and to take the deer. I think he's glad he did. He was back in school by 945!
He's the point guard on his basketball team, the quarterback on the football and most importantly a straight A student. Now he's a successful buck hunter. I couldn't be more proud. :D Thanks for looking.

tell your son congrats on the buck and pat yourself on the back for being there for him. It sounds like he has his head on straight and keep up the good work.

Like the song says "these are the moments ". That is awesome. My 14 year son is the same way and I live to hunt with him. Absolutely nothing like it.

That is a very nice Buck; the young man is obviously no stranger to applying himself. They are all lessons that will serve him well in the future.

The buck came out to our right about 65 yards and started walking right towards us along the wood line. He stopped at a perfect time and began to make a scrap. He had no idea we were there. My only regret is that he didn't have to sit out longer to get this deer! I'm just kidding of course. I just don't want him to think it's this easy!
These kids are entering a different world than the one in the past. A much more competitive world. I had a conversation with my dad, who is now retired, about how tough it is raising four kids, working all the time and still finding balance. He just kinda laughed and said with a grin, "I'm glad I'm done with that". I laughed right back at him and said, "thanks for the advice".
Thanks for all the nice comments.
