If the above-ground run has the vinyl wire bottom you might try putting a walk board on it, or even particle board half of the run. If they poop on the board it's still a lot easier to scrape it off to fall thru the wire than cleaning the box.

I live on a farm where cow and horse crap is common in the pastures. I have seen beagles and other breeds of dogs go wallow in the manure and get it all over them. It must be refreshing.

Rolling in crap and dead animal carcasses are a dog's way of being stealth. They do that to mask their own scent - especially if they're fixin' to go hunt. They think it "hides" them. Of course our dogs today don't know why they do it. It's just a carried forward instinct to see something smelly and think, "I need to roll in that."

Creatures of environment and habit.
I fenced in the old garden spot to contain the pups as they grew. I had thrown a pile of limbs from trimming and clean-up onto the upper end (thought maybe a place to liberate some bunnies). Well the pups played and chewed the pile, then the males got to marking the pile, now they all go to the pile to do their business.
Hounds don't want to be nasty unless they are forced to live in close proximity with it and become bored. Sometimes a turd for a toy can become a valuable thing if all your brethren want it...the sticks are a better substitute imho...they don't even mark the water bucket since they've go the wood pile...

Thanks to all your suggestions. I am moving her and my other dogs to a new kennel in a couple of weeks, hopefully one of these ideas work or I know one that will.
