Man HT and all you people willing to pay a thousand dollars for the type of hound you describe, I wish you lived closer to me. I am in Michigan, will pay gas money to get you here and run with any of your champions for that kind of money.

There is no right price for a dog you don't want to sell. Great looking hound.

+1bucks better beagles wrote:Boys, I would like to have a dollar for every dog that I have seen that has achieved a win or place or two in a trial or two but never went any further. Around here $300 to $400 will buy you a real good dog. If you don't believe it, I can show you. I bought a nice $100 dog the other day that will jump and run his own rabbit with a ton of speed. Pedigreed up the ying yang. I have a 2 year old that I gave $250 for that is out of Hustspurs Woodlot Hemi that is the absolute total package. All my dogs are under two years old, well bred and will do what they are referenced to do. None of them were big money dogs.
HattarasBob: Send me info on the $300 dogs that can solo a rabbit. I am always interested. Especially if they are relatively young. As for the $1200 ones. Wouldn't care if they could walk on water. They could never be my cup of tea.
Just saying to the thread originator that, in my area, the price this dog would bring. There isn't a lot of dog money in Michigan. This dog does not indicate a lot of potential to make money either. Illogical, to give $1200 for a dog expecting no return.

The dog in question just ran her 6th trial ever, 3rd place. Placed in 3 of 6 trials with limited training time. I appreciate the input I got, I asked because I have had a couple offers on her, $1000 and $1500. I refused them both. I was thinking along the lines of $3k, but from the feedback I got, im thinking at this point, that may be high.

What it really boils down to is what you are willing to take and what someone is willing to pay.
I once bought a LP Grand Champion that was an outstanding gun dog and those titles meant nothing to me for $500.00. Most of my friends just knew her as a good rabbit dog. They never asked and were never told of her wins.
Obviously dogs sell for much more north of here. Seems trialing is way more popular there too and many more clubs close by so more participate and get the opportunity to win or place more frequently. If I trialed, I would want to have something that could make the trip more enjoyable.
That is the good thing about hunting with your dogs and dogs of your friends, just about every time out, everyones dog gets bragged on for something and each and every one when we have rabbits in the box has earned a trophy in our eyes!
Hope it is a good experience for you and the buyer how ever its done and for whatever money.
Both being satisfied is the real goal anyway isn't it !

Sell, sell. You must sell when somebody makes that kind of offer man. Let us know so we can follow her progress.
Re: Need advice: Whats the right price for this hound?
I would say 1000-1500 would be right in line for the dog. If I had a dog that I thought something of and could consistently go to a trial and feel that I had a shot there is no way I would part with the dog for this price though. It just seems too much headache and money to replace. My buddy just bought 2 little bitches sight unseen, 1 has a win and several places and the other has places too. They are 4 years old. He paid $1000 a piece for them and I thought that was plenty cheap enough. I just feel that beagles are way underpriced for the amount of time and effort that one has to put into them to get a nice dog.

I sold a real nice female that had 1 - 2nd and 6 - 3rds in AKC LP. I sold her because I didn't think she was confident enough to take the front and hold on to it for a win. I got $800 and the guy was happy, except he had to sell the rest of his pack because they couldn't keep up and made them look bad. She also placed in the Mid-West 4th or 5th I think. Today I wouldn't sell her but back then I was trailing in LPH.
Re: Need advice: Whats the right price for this hound?
I have observed hound prices for several years. Its interesting to watch. These seem to be the TOP end prices. Im sure most sell for less than listed price. These prices assume AKC registration and papers in order, dog being healthy.
For a puppy:
$200-$300 is tops.....to get the top it must have strong pedigree from top performing sire and dam. Timing and location can make a big difference. Some guys have tried to crack the $300 mark, but there seems to be considerable resistance from most.
For a well started dog:
$300-$400 is tops....this assumes considerable field time and under a year old. Not too many impressive young dogs are for sale, most are culls that people are recovering puppy price on. They usually have pups the same age doing better.
For a finished dog:
$400-$1000 is tops....For a dog to bring more than $1000 it will have to be impressive with a win plus....These dogs are NEVER forsale unless the owner dies or is in need of cash to keep from going to jail.....
If the dog is good enough you will make time to run it......
AKC Female Field Champions:
$1000-$2000 is tops.....needs to be under 6 to get top price and of notable pedigree. A small handful go for more, but if you do, consider yourself fortunate.
AKC Male Field Champions:
$1000-$3000.....there have been some go for more, but your looking at IFC and a pedigree people want to breed to....these are rare and sometimes unexpected with a buyer that has money and wants to buy a way into the beagle world.
This is what I have noticed to be the norms over the past 10 years or so. Prices really have not changed much. Some guys have a solid reputation and get rewarded for that in the selling price. Others have a poor reputation and you can expect them to get less than 1/2 of top price. The interesting thing to me is that the top priced dogs are often not the best. Dogs being out of shape, or lacking the solo time to properly develop bring the price down drastically as so it should.
